Default Will shooting at low resolution increase noise performance?

Hey guys. I have a 550D. And as we all know, its sensor allows shots of up to 18 megapixels to be shot.

I wonder, if I select the option to shoot at a lower resolution, say 12MP, will noise performance be better than at 18MP, at the same ISO level?

When you lower the resolution on your camera, all it does is take a 18MP photo and then resize it to the lower resolution. So, the answer to your question is, no.
