Hi. I intend to upgrade my D70 kit lens. Are there any great recommendations? The 17-55 f2.8 DX lens seem perfect except for the price. Of course that is high end. Is there a good $1000 or so Nikkor alternative to the 18-70?

There isn't really a similar alternative. There's the Nikkor 24-85 F3.5-4.5 and the 18-35 F3.5-4.5 but both are not really as versatile as the 18-70.

Wait for the Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC lens. Should be in town in 1 to 2 months, my estimate.

If longer range than can also consider Sigma 18-125mm. Frankly there is no replacement for the very good Nikon 18-70mm unless you are willing to do away with the wide angles. The other only replacement is the Nikon 17-55mm.
Suggest that you keep the lens and get a tele to compliment unless you can say exectly what is it that you wanted and not get it from the 18-70mm. |

...the Nikkor 28 ~ 105 F 3.5 ~ 4.5. Retailing for about $600. I used to own one and loved it . Pretty good pictures all round but only draw back is you'll lose out on the 28mm if you use it on the D70 (but gain on the 105!) due to the 1.5X magnification factor for digital.
If you seldom use 28mm then it's ok I suppose but that's a good lens to fit your budget. BTW, I sold it because I need the 28mm for my D70 but ...still have a soft spot for that lens. We had good times together. Hope it helps. |
