Default Kit lens for 550D (EF S18-135IS) vs EF28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM big difference?

    Hi,
I am a Nikon D80 user for 3 - 4 years but recently considering a switch to Canon 550D due to the weight of the D80. I use my camera only for special occasions and travelling.

I am wondering if there is a big difference in quality between the kit lens EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS and EF28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM. Any users who have tried both?

I intend to get one standard zoom which hopefully can handle low light conditions better than my D80 + kit lens. Any suggestions if my intended purchases are not advisable.

    I intend to get: 550D + either EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS or EF28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM + 50mm f2.8 prime lens.

    Thanks!

If you want a standard zoom that can handle low light conditions better than the kit lens, I suggest you look at the following:

-Tamron 17-50 f2.8 (VC or non-VC depends on your budget)
-Sigma 18-50 f2.8 (discontinued, but still can find 2nd hand)
-Sigma 17-50 f2.8 OS HSM (sharper vs. the Sigma 18-50, has stabilisation, but also much more expensive)
-Tokina 16-50 f2.8 (not much stuff I find online, a lot of reviews say it's soft, a lot of users say they love it, I don't really know who to believe)
-Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4 OS HSM (stabilised, not constant f2.8 but still better than kit lens)

Don't go for f3.5-5.6 if you're looking for something that works decently in low light. You may also consider getting an external flash.

    Also, consider the 50mm f/1.4 USM. You'll lo9ve it.

Is there a big difference between the 50mm f/1.4 and the 50mm f/1.8 that i saw on canon's website. the price difference is rather significant.

Price increases exponentially as aperture gets larger

Well... I would rather get a good one then buy and sell many not so good lens. Since lens is, I would think, more important than the body.

I am considering the Sigma 10-20mm F3.5 EX DC HSM. Can I assume the price is around $1.5k or more?
