Hello, does anybody know if the above mentioned lens is capable of macro shots? Or is a micro/macro lens really required to take macro?
thanks |

Depends on how much trouble you want to go to and how finicky you are about quality. You can only get fuss-free 1:1 with a dedicated macro lens, but you can get lesser magnifications with close-up filters, extension tubes, teleconvertors, and lenses with a 'macro' mode.

thanks for the reply, but I can't seem to focus on objects like butterfles etc. It will be very blurry and the background will be focused instead.

it sounds as if you are not within the minimum focussing distance. try physically moving your body in and out while keeping the butterfly smack in your frame. Once you move to the correct distance, it should snap into focus.

Did quote a few macros with this lens and well, magnification is not so fantastic but results and color still acceptable. Did add a +4 close up lens and the results are quite ok but the lens hunts like mad. Some of the shots I took with the 70-300mm http://forums.clubsnap.org/showthread.php?t=86892 This one with a +4 close up http://forums.clubsnap.org/showthread.php?t=87646 Hope this helps. |

Hi,
Can I confirmed that your are using a +4 filter with your 70-300mm G lens for these photos? They are good. With the +4 what is the min distance from the subject? Thanks.

Without a +4, min distance should be about 1.5 metre away. With a +4, somewhere within the 20cm I think. Depending on focal length. Max focal length with +4 somewhat around 100mm for the pic to look good. Anyhow, I just start playing macros with this 70-300mm and +4, so almost all the measurements are estimates. |

Your macros are great. By the way what filter brand did you use for +4 close up? |
