15-85 supercedes 17-85 in all aspects, except price.

Why don't you keep the kit lens and buy a prime lens. In this way, u can play with DOF for more creative composition.

May be can start with the 50mm f1.8 lens first.

Depending on what is your usage of the lens. Sometime prime lens are easier to use den zoom.

A prime lens is a fixed focal length lens, you can't zoom in and out with it.

Usually they are big aperture lens, that let u have more shutter speed when u need it in dim conditions.

It's not difficult to use, so don't worry.

But the 50mm is not wide, I'm just trying to give you more options for your next lens.

not a must but highly recommend that you have it.

the primary use of a hood is to minimise flaring in your photos and also add a lil' contrast to your pic.

secondarily, it acts as a physical protector for you lens, in case you bump onto hard surfaces.

    Y not get urself Tamron 17 - 50 F2.8.

A 50/1.8 prime is probably a nice inexpensive lens to learn new areas/approaches.

The other 2 zooms you mentioned just does more of the same from what you have.
Maybe a longer zoom 55-200mm will give you more options as well.

Think the 18-55mm not a bad lens for it price. Use to have that with 450D also.
To me, the 15-85mm IQ seem better than 18-55mm but the price isn't cheap. It also a gd walkabout lens for crop body except that it not a fix aperture. The review for 15-85 also better than 17-85.
