    Default About Focal Length

    Just curious

Do you guys think cropping a picture from 400mm lens in APS-C will be at roughly the same quality as 400mm in superzoom compact ?

No, the sensor size is already different, how to have same quality?

100% crop at low ISO will still be visibly different actually. For prints, at low ISO will be close for 8R. For 4R doubt you would see a difference. At higher ISO naturally APS-C has the edge. Though with a good noise reduction program most modem day prosumers can hold their own reasonably well.

Depends on how you define superzoom compact wor. Some small small cameras have same or marginally close sensor size as APS-C. Heck, some of those small cameras come in 35mm! (Im talking about range finders)

Does a rangefinder come with 400mm lens? TS is talking about such a focal length.

Due to cost constraints and compromises made due to zoom range the zoom lenses of compact cams don't have the same quality as similar lenses for DSLR. Compact cams have an expected life span of maybe 2 years or less, then the next model is out and the maker expects consumers to buy it. A lens for DSLR can serve many years, the efforts put into design and manufacturing are much higher. The result is a better picture quality.

Woah boss, take a chill pill. You are thinking too deep man.
TS was just asking a theoretical question.

TS didn't mention specfically what cameras. So im just postulating.
400mm on an M9? Not likely, but entirely possible.

    it's getting interesting

Let's say i want to buy Lumix FZ-100 which has maximum optical zoom to 600mm at 35mm equivalent

If i use maximum zoom to get picture of a pig on a tree

will it be roughly the same quality as im using 70-300 lens at APS-C DSLR and i crop the image to simulate the full capture of the FZ100 ?

Wa. This question need calculator...and im kinda lazy. However...
I believe the image from the DSLR is going to suffer very badly.
Because the lumix sensor is really very small compared to an APS-C. That means you're gonna crop out a hell lot from it end up with a very pixelated image.

Take the Canon 75-300 and a Canon 70-300 and you will see already a difference

    hahaha

i'm just wondering if someone here ever did the comparison between full frame by superzoom compact against crop in DSLR
