Great thread guys ... I've always been curious on commercial photography and wanted to learn from the industry. Lots of the stories here sounds like like hard work but the learning aspect is great as well I guess.

Will look forward to more posting from you guys here.

just would like to hear you guy's opinions..

    which is more important?

lighting (technical skill) or composition (ability to see what is 'nice' or not)

    let's discuss

Composition is more of a concern to a documentary photographer than a commercial photographer. Lighting is more of a concern to a commercial photographer than a documentary photographer. Composition deals with contents and lighting deals with beauty.

both are equally important, especially to the commercial/illustrative photographer. you need to be very well-versed in the craft in order to be able to portray what the client want. you also need a very good sense of 'what is nice', because after all, that's what a commercial photographer is paid for ..ability to create 'nice' images for general consumption.

however, if given only once choice to decide which is more important..i would have to say, composition.

my mentor asked me the very same question before, and the answer he gave me reinforced what i have believed in.

lighting skills is something that can be picked up along the way with experience and lots of practice. BUT, the ability to see things and determine 'what is nice, beautiful, pleasing' is something that cannot be taught. it has to come from your own development.

e.g. for a less technical proficient beginner..he/she can spend hours just trying to get the lighting right, but for someone who has no aesthetic sense whatsover, he can spend days shooting the same thing and it still wouldn't turn out nice.

    agree?

why i am sharing this is because that question has provoked my thinking towards assisting and learning. what is it that we really need to focus on?

hope it didn't turn out to be just some mumbo-jumbo thrash talk

Think they are of equilibrium. Cant really say that which is more important than the other even in the aspect of the diff. fields of photography.

just to update you guys, those who couldn't turn up today...

after much OT during the discussion ( ) we have decided on:

    Theme: Food shot (japanese sushi)
    Date/time: 9th Oct 2005, 10am to 2pm
    Location: To-be-confirmed

as probably we might be doing 2 sets, and i can only bring 1 set of lighting, does any one have lobang for rental of lights, or best, studio+lighting?
