You can use a sigma 150-500mm lens, your kit lens, a 10-20, an 8mm fisheye... You are the only one who knows your own stlye, so you should get the lens that meets the requirement of your style.

Do you do an up close and conversation kind of street photography or so you shoot undetected from afar? It all depends on your shooting style.

I am hoping to shoot from afar, so that my presence will not rob the spontaneity.

    85mm 1.8
    135mm f2
    24-70mm 2.8 or third party

It depends on your style but I would advise getting in closer, to be part of the crowd, an observer and just snap away. Its not easy at first but the end result are rewarding.

for up close you may want to consider the L primes or third parties like the sigma 20/24/28 f1.8.

Whatever you have is good enough for street photography. Technique is the key.

And you think a long tube is not somewhat obvious? And there is no spontaneity at close range? Maybe just google for 'street photography', read carefully, see what others use and how the results look like.

70-200 f2.8 at 2.8 will really bring out the subject with creamy bokeh.
