In the beginning, the pricing in Malaysia should be around same with SG.

Only models later in the life cycle, do you get great savings in Malaysia...

D700 is really cheap in MY now..

    How cheap?

I think HKG is still the place to get the X100 and D800... savings alone would be enough to pay for the airfare and a few days stay at a decent hotel

The nikon D7000 is 1.5x for DX. Think u are confusing with Canon DX cameras which is 1.6x.

and there's nothing wrong for us to wait for newer model ESP if we know what we want, what to expect and when it's coming.
rude? just pointing out the facts. Using WTH is rude too!

just like any other purchases, buying a D700 also must make the owner feel good. If not why bother?

what you want aand expect now will be outdated in 2 yrs time. there is no end to the technology chase. If budget is a constrain for the TS, then maybe he can look for a pre-loved D700.

    Wait or not wait?

If you're already happy with your current cam and able to wait, then wait for the new 'D800' to see what it has to offer, by then if find that it is too ex and not worth the price then reconsider the D700.

If the current cam is not satisfactory or already out of commission, need another cam as soon as possible, either get a 2nd hand D700 first and wait for the 'D800', or just go for a brand new D700,..or D3_ even!

Right now, nobody knows precisely what is in that new replacement specs/package, who can clearly advise if it is worth the wait? Newer models may have newer functions and/or gimmicks, but may not necessary be any better in the IQ and noise control. We may have occasionally picked up some 'insider' reviews, etc..etc..from the internet. These are merely rumoured/ 'reviews' in labs, not test by consumers and/or independent professional photographers....so what weight does it holds, other than something to take note and observe when the actual time comes?

As for those who are into latest model chase and Megapix chase,...no need to think,...wait for it!

my $0.02 is just basic common sense which is already in most people, and applies not only to camera, it goes for other items like cars, electronic devices etc..etc..as well!
What I really missed most, is my first SLR. An Olympus OM2 with the Zuiko 35mm f/1.4, back in 1982!

im a D700 user and i agree like what others have said the D700 is more than what an average photographer is. The D700 Successor isn't going to benefit an average photog by much over the D700. Just imagine you are one of the D800 wait'ers 2yrs ago. Till now still no D800. I wouldn't be surprised if there isn't a D800 soon because it seems nikon is focusing on the EVIL cameras. Just look at Canon's 5D and 5D2. How long did the 5D2 wait'ers waited?

If you are lusting over an FF cam by nikon lookout for the next Nikon Announcement event, if its near wait first. If not, then get a D700 now and get blown away by it because its really awesome!

    Hi TS,

I bought myself a brand new D700 last month because I know that I could not wait for the so called "replacement".
On why I didnt wait was because I didnt have any camera with me since Sep 2010. I did consider waiting but I just cannot wait any longer and missed all the opportunites to shoot therefore I bought it. It will be a different story if I still have my old camera with me and if budget allows me, I dont mind replacing my D700 if the replacement are worth it. All I need from the replacement is a full HD movie.

I have a D700 and there are still things which I am not happy with.

    1) dynamic range. It is not too bad but more will be welcomed. Considering how improved D7000 was, this is the main thing to look out for in D800
    2) movie mode.
    3) swivel LCD? that would be great for me.

BUY NOW OR WAIT FOR NEXT MODEL?

This question will still be around another 100 yrs.
DSLRs are like any consumer electronic item nowadays, e.g. iPhone, iPad, mobile phone, laptops, etc.

There will be an endless list of features that will be available model after model (how else do the manufacturers keep making the huge profits? by 'teasing' the customers to keep chasing and buying their very latest models!.

Now back to photography, life cycles for film cameras were much longer. We used to keep the FM and FM2 for 15+ years and we were still very very happy with them. We bought good lenses and we continued to enjoy years of photography.

With the digital age, product life cycles become shorter. Still the question remains... are your just buying features or are you looking for a tool that (together with your input, your skills, your experience - yes some features are good to have) TO PRODUCE A BEAUTIFUL PHOTO.

So my suggestion to the TS is to buy what he needs for the kind of photography he does and start enjoying the journey. I can guarantee that every other week, there will be still more models with more 'bells & whistles'. The chase is endless.

One good note though - INVEST IN THE BEST LENSES YOU CAN AFFORD! These will transcend many body changes.

    Hope this helps.

My FM2 FE2 lasted like a lifetime & all SLR cameras then, regardless of brand or model, use the same film thats interchangeable. This kind of predicament TS is facing is but basically the curse of cameras using electronic sensors.

I just got a preowned D700 because the price is right & I love its photo making capabilities thats close to film. Important thing is I am really enjoying it NOW, & also in the forseeable future too. But who knows how many more years, or even months, before the upgrade itch bites or when the camera becomes obselete/unsupported forcing a change

This is a very wise advice. Yes the real investment is in the lens. Of course I do not deny that great pictures is also a function of the camera sensor and the eye of the photographer. But camera sensors keep improving and I tend to treat this like a PC, a better one will be out within 10 months.

So as for waiting or buying... if u are serious about improving your photography, buy and and start training the eye. Better to get quality lens, these makes a difference in the quality of the images.

    The price looks true

Anyway if really is using D3x sensor, i think it may turn off some as the high iso performance is not as good from what i gathered.

It better not be true... I don't really care about the 24MP... but the FPS really SUX!!! ISO too..

Maybe it's targetting a different audience than the 700.... if that's the case... I'd rather take 700 anyday...

This is probably a cheaper version of the D3X...

Whilst the 700 is the cheaper version of the D3s... Hence, 700 lives...until 700s?

other spec wise i think nikon still can tune up some improvement but inherent noise performance of d3x sensor at higher iso may not be easy to improve unless nikon has breakthrough in process engine to reduce the noise without any or very min impact to the original data.

That is a big hope... but from the specs, I'm least interested in it now...

Technically, I think D800 (if it's true) isn't a replacement for D700 then (repeating my previous point), probably a class of its own...
