Wink Sony HDPS-M1 40 GB portable photo storage

Sony announce their new portable storage device aimed squarely at 'high megapixel digital still camera'. The HDD Photo Storage HDPS-M1 has a 40 GB hard disk built-in, Memory Stick and Compact Flash slots, a Lithium-Ion battery, a one-button Copy function and USB 2.0 (high speed) connectivity. Clearly designed to be very easy to use the HDPS-M1 has no LCD display or video output capability, instead it is purely intended to be used as a backup / mass storage device for digital photographers. The compact HDPS-M1 measures just 135 x 92 mm (5.3 x 3.5 in) and is 30 mm (1.1 in) thick, it weighs just 300 g (10.6 oz) ready to use.

A couple 4Gb Microdrives is a little smaller. 5 years from now that will be a doorstop.
All due respect..

Looks good. I don't give a hoot about LCDs and fancy features anyway. I just want it with a decent capacity, light weight and small size.

Microdrives are built with a totally different use altogether? I can't see the point of a comparison.

Then take a look at the qcool otg (http://www.freelink.com.hk/QCoolOTG.htm) or the identical noontech exo. It's smaller ( 116x78x22mm ), lighter (145g wo hdd, 240-250g w hdd), cheaper ($170 wo hdd), and supports more media formats ( important for those who use SD cards ). Looks quite good too.

Agree. If backup speed is of great concern, you have to get these 'huge' backup storages. If it's a casual backup, I am using iRiver H320 MP3 Jukebox to do the job. It takes more than 30 minutes to download 512MB, but it's compact and it works.

My DigiMat II takes about 7-8 min for a full 1gb CF card backup. Quite okay imo.

Cheers!
