Thread: 70-200 VR II or VR?

Default 70-200 VR II or VR?

Hi guys, I going to switch to FX camera. I don't own a 70-200mm f2.8 before and would be buying one this year. However, I am now stuck between the 70-200 VR II or the first version of VR.

There are people who told me that the first version is better than the VR II and advise me to buy the second hand.

If you are in my situation, which will you choose? Please advise.

    Thank you.

    budget dictate your purchase.

for me, i would very much prefer getting VR I ... VR II is too ex, and i know people like me won't use that focal length enough to justify a VR II

Hmm, my budget can be up to 3K+ for a brand new VR II.

If your budget allows get the vr2. No horse run compare to vr1.

The VR II has Faster AF, more glass elements and NANO crystal coating!

hi all, I did a comparision on both the model in the following link:

    VR II

    VR I

The optical seem to lose out to the VR I version. This is the dilemma I am in even though VR II has more advance technology.

Get the VR1 version. Save $1K. It has more reach when you need it. I find it sharp enough.

Both are good enough. VR II of course is better in some ways and not so good in less ways. So it depends on your budget.

Hi, since you don't have budget problem. Just go ahead with VR2.

Why choose for window Xp when there is Windows 7? Same why choose VR1 when budget not a concern?
Should go ahead with the VR2. The R&D of Nikon had made justifications of the improvement. Resale value is also higher in long run. Buy lens, should also consider it as an investment.

If you are going FX, then VR2 should be better due to it's corner performance...7 ED vs 5 in prev version

Also mfd of 1.4 vs 1.5m is very attractive, at least to me.

Do you REALLY believe that??? you think nikon engineers are idiots? How can a new version of the trinity lens be worse than the older version it is replacing optically???

The optical performance of a lens is the most impt characteristic and I don't believe Nikon did not improve on that for the new version.

Unless the newer design is a cost down version..... which doesn't look like it.

Don't worry, the 2 giants will always compete esp for this 70-200mm f2.8 range. VR3 will have mfd of 0.5m

Vr2 is quite an improvement in iq compared to vr1. Many pros I know including me have upgraded to vr2. Wherther the price different justify the improvement you have to gauge yourself. Usually for lenses get the best you can afford cause you will not think of upgrade again.

I saw in dpreview that the VR II flaring seem to be an issue though even with Nano coating, result is same as the youtube link. This may also be one of the reason is due to the shallow lens hood as compared to the VR I lens hood.

The star effect as seen in the test taken is not as good as VR I. Inorder to counter the soft corners of the VR I, the engineers have to do something but ultimately, something has to go in the end.

I can't ignore the test results as done by reviewers.

Other than that, VR II has its own advantage too.

I just finding out which lens stand out the best regardless of the version vs its cost.

Thank you to all the CSers' views and input in this thread. I just really interested to find out other views than mine before commit to buying the lens.
