Not forgetting that a diamond's selling price is jacked up a few folds after "major" brands like Lee Hwa engrave their brand name into the diamond through laser. You are paying a lot for the brand but the diamond itself (natural ones) is brand-less.

DSLR --> If you are talking about top end like 1DIV, then if you think about how it can shoot 10fps for many shots consecutively without breaking down after say 50 000 shots, maybe you can understand abit why it costs so much.

If a DSLR nowadays is expensive, imagine 10 years ago, Canon IXUS with 2MP, 3x zoom, 1hr+ battery life selling for $999. Free Gift? Yes, a 32MB or 64MB CF Card. During that time, your average hourly partime salary is still around $2.50~$3 for starters. You need to work at least 400 hrs just to get this.

They are not make of diamonds or precious stones... I wonder what makes them so expensive???

a 5DMKII can buy 5 iphones 4, 7 Xbox etc... haven mention about the 1DMKIV..

If you think DSLR is expensive, don't buy and just use your phone camera to shoot. If you think phone is expensive, then use a pencil and paper to sketch. If can't afford, come to my office I will sponsor you some pencils and papers.

You can buy a cheap entry level DSLR <$1000; why buy a 1Ds III.

You can buy a $1.5 ball point pen; why buy a Montblanc.

You can buy a 2cents pencil; why buy a Graf von Faber-Castell Perfect Pencil.

You can buy a cheap toliet paper; why buy a Renovo’s luxury toilet paper.

There is a lot of why buy the best when a cheap alternative can do the 'job' for you. If you are not into that particular line of hobbies a cheap alternative will do the 'job' as well as a expensive one because you cannot 'spot' the differences. There must be a reason for many to buy thus a market to sell. If their reason does not seem 'justified' to you does it really matter to them. The Answer is 'NO'. So why bother to ask.

But for many the reason is simply I am 'rich' enough to buy.

My Olympus C4000, 4Mp (still with me and works) cost $799.00 when I bought it. Yesterday, I paid $679.00 for a LX5. And the Sony A55 with 18-250 is now $1,600.00.

I am thankful that there is no high running cost these days with Cards. I must have spent a fortune on E6 film and processing back then, not to mention the countless hours of figuring out exposure values and bracketing.

Go shoot pictures and be happy, thankful!

It's ironic that this question comes up at a time when many seasoned photogs are actually *complaining* that DSLRs are so cheap nowadays that you have hordes of cheap amateur photographers (like a horde of secondary or poly kids) spoiling the wedding photography market, etc etc.

    Dear member,

Worry less about why DSLR are so expensive and try to go out and shoot some nice photos.

A DSLR is not a necessity but a want unless you are a Full Time photographer.

If you want to compare about the pricing, DSLR are not expensive because of the money needed for design and research.

I believe that you had your answer.

With that, I will close this thread to prevent it from de-railing any further.

    Thank you.
