Second this Its not a stupid question, you do need a longer lens for animals. With a $300 budget you can get a Tamron or Sigma 70-300, which will get you closer. No VR though, you will need to have really steady hands.

Get a used Nikkor 75-300 (now probably hard to find). Great lens with no VR.

2nd hand? Do some searching in the Marketplace/Nikon Buy and Sell section. It's just lower down the main forum page.

Depends on how close you can get to the animals.

You'll have longer reach than your kit lens, yes. But "is it enough" still depends on how far away your subject is. Also, do note that it is a variable aperture lens, so handholding in low light will probably be difficult, even with the VR. If you're shooting normal- to big-sized animals at closer distances in bright sunlight, you should be ok.

That is so generic it's impossible to answer. Are talking about an eagle soaring high overhead or a bird sitting at your window?

you need to understand the concept of focal length. Then you will know what lens you need for what subject given what distance.

If for birding then might not be enough. Unless you're shooting in jurong bird park.

For birds, enthusiasts usually use this or longer.

Only you can decide that. We do not know exactly what situation you will be shooting in, so we cannot help you determine the focal length you need.

If in doubt, rent first and test.

With this type of budget, it seems that 55-200mm is the answer.

yes, the 55-200mm nikon can fit onto your d3000 and also use auto focus with vibration reduction.

Alot of lenses can fit onto your d3000, if its a nikon lens, 95% of the time it will fit. If its other brand lenses eg sigma , tamron etc, they will say nikon mount which means can fit onto your d3000. What you should be worried is whether it can auto focus on your d3000, we wont be so bad as to suggest a lens to you that cant fit onto your d3000.
