Default Why people talk of treatment at private hospital?

    For me.
    Very Simple.
    Definitely cannot afford.
So no need to think about it.

Don't know why people talk about getting treatment at private hospitals. It is not for everyone. Maybe meant for hundred-millionaires and billionaires.

Definitely not for man-in-the-street earning small pay working hard eking out a living. (like me)

A small operation and medium stay may set you back $100,000.

A medium operation and long stay may have a bill of $300,000 to $500,000.

A major operation and long stay....the sky is the limit.....> millions$.

i had my first operation at a private hospital Gleneagles Day Surgery. it is not so expensive as i had medical insurance coverage.

My total bill was 9k + but i had to place a deposit of 3k and when i checked out i just paid another 2k+ and rest deducted from medisave.

I could claim my Pre hosp bills and Post Hosp bills from the insurer too. Plus i claimed for hospital income benefits.

The private hospital gleneagles provided me the final bill within 15 days. My friend went to CGH and waited for 2 mths for the final bill.
With the final bill i was able to claim back 100% of all my bills.

How many days of stay was it for the $9k bill?

yes it is definitely more expensive.... but not to the amounts u have stated above (unless the patient stays in the Presidential Suite)

what is considered small, medium and major ?my father in law's heart operation at Gleneagles including, operating room fees, surgeon's fees, , ICU and 2-to-a-room ward etc etc was less than $120,000 in total ... imho that is a major operation

    A past case.

    http://www.lawnet.com.sg/legal/ln2/comm/HTML/51647.htm

"This action was commenced by ........ a sum of $537,432.34 ..... in respect of medical facilities rendered to the defendant’s mother".

Of course they are excellent hospitals.

For those who can afford, good for you. Congratulations.

How does a lay working person landed in "private hospital"?

It is because of our local medical systems i.e. If one has seen a GP and he referred to a private consultant for further investigations which eventually needed to be hospitalized for immediate treatments. (of course, if it s not urgent, one can instead walk into any government hospital for medical attention).

Unless if you are one who understands the systems and knowing that hospital stay is needed, request the private consultant to refer to a polyclinic or government hospital, treatments will be in a private hospital.

It is not you like or want. When in pain, trust me, I have no thoughts of the "private hospital comfort or the $$ involved".

I learnt a lesson from an ops. 1 year after discharge and reading more on the medi-shield subject on the CPF web, took up enhance medical insurance and lucky to be accepted. I use medi-safe fund to pay.

if you have been in the government hospital, you will try to save enough for private. let say, if it is life threatening (subsidize / private C/B2 class) and the ongoing diagnosis is done in the hospital, you would wish you are in private hospital. you need to wait at least a day for each test (eg. MRI, etc). more annoying is, everyday you are see by different doc. and you are like a subject being studied by those housemen or student (Duke? something). worse, at the end of the day, you are treated like a pest if you dont want to be discharge despite that you know you are not fully recover / nobody to take care of you at home.

worse is those nurse, who dont know how to poke needle. every poke will cause you arm or hand to swell (Phebitis). (edit sorry not all the nurse)

sigh, there is always a price to pay..

refer to National heart centre as private patient. waited a month to see doc for consultation. seen doc, waited another month for echocardiogram, Threadmill, ECG. after that waited 2 weeks for the result.

wnet to private. consultation, echocardiogram, Threadmill, ECG and finally result in just one day! all for the same price as private.

if you got chest pain, do you want to clear the doubts or finding within one day or 2 and a half months? sometimes you have to strike a balance between treatmnet and diagnosis. dont subject yourself to all those waiting by choosing to go government hospital because of subsidise rate. what i meant is we need to see which is more cost effective.

Simple. if you've watch House MD, you'll understand the reason behind why people choose Expensive Private Doctors over those General Practitioners.

The difference mainly is that private hospitals are not for patients who gets subsidy care while patients who receive subsidy have to go to government hospitals, the care and fees are all about the same, it is just that at SGH e.g. your fees are subsidied if you are Singaporean.

Foreigners have to pay the full amount at SGH, and then it becomes less differentiated with private

So out of the 3 health insurance schemes which one to pick?

    The best - private hospital

    second - govt A ward

    3rd govt - B1 ward

I have done rough calculation with a rider that caps the payout by you to a certain level. For private hospital the total outlay on insurance premiums from age 55 to 90 is about $120,000.

Do bear in mind that when the medical bill claim figure is very high, then any insurer will try their best to nit pick and tell you that you are not covered for a variety of reasons - e.g. they pull out detailed medical records and say you never declare - do you know that they have a detailed island wide medical database? But they don't tell you when you are faithfully paying your premium for years. They are not wrong. They are just defending their situation in the face of an enormous claim.

Expect this to happen. So don't aim too high and think you got it covered by choosing the best most expensive package. And then choosing an expensive private hospital - because you mistakenly thought you got it covered. You may have to bear the whole or at least a large fraction of the medical bill yourself in the end. It can be $500,000 or more.

    ...........................

Oh, for those who doubt that the bill can come to millions... (of course - not talking about ordinary people like you and me, lah)

There are people who can afford this.
For example, the top generals of some other Asean country ruled by generals (no prizes are offered for guessing correctly because the answer is too obvious; anyway reported in the news) do come to Singapore private hospitals for treatment.
When you are a ruler, what can you not afford?
Sultans of neighbouring countries/states also come for medical treatment. Of course they must have the best.

Many years back, my grandfather (passed away already) had a heart bypass surgery at Mount E, because he is Malaysian.
Initial ops package quoted was $25K, however old people are weaker, thus developed some complication and he was transferred to ICU for something like 1-2 weeks.
The final bill was $100K (all cash) then.
After some negotiation with the hospital, they slashed the bill to $70K and allowed installment.
My daughter was prematured when born (NUH) and stayed in ICU for 3 months and she was stayed under 'C class ward', end of the day the bill was $13K and all can be paid by medisave.

    Go buy insurance lah.

That time I stayed at SGH 3 days......die die wanted to come out. Funny thing is, my sis was the person in the lab who is testing my blood (she looked out for it, NRIC LOL!). In the end she rejected my samples, coz not enough blood. Missy did not take enough blood.
That's why in the morning the missy woke me up at 7.20am to take blood again. MY sis visisted me after that, told me the sample wasn't enough. After that I knew what to do already....signed Letter of Indemnity. The houseman still yaya papaya, say Private Hosp the general medical management is the same. Sorry mate, sayorana. You have to clear your bowels about 10 times a day and whole stomach all bloated up, running 39 deg C fever, die die don't want to administer antibiotics.

Mount E, Specialist (Dr Lim Kian Peng, gasenterologist).... Whacked Ciprobay (Ciprofloxacin). Nurses also nicer and one Chinese really pretty. 2 days I was out of that place, just in time for CNY.

Trust me, buy insurance, both Life as well as Hospitalisation including the rider - the full works.

    I have slightly different experience.
I want to bring my parents (from indonesia) for medical checkup.
After a few calls and comparison, the cost in singapore is so high and the checkup packages are either too extensive (have lots of extra which they dont need) or too basic.
A few email exchanges to private hospital and I opted to bring them to Mahkota hospital in Melacca.
They customise one for both of my parents and later I got one for myself too.
I can pick and choose what I want instead of the package and the assistant calculated the cost and after we agree we go for it.
We are very happy with that. Cannot really do this thing in singapore.

It was a day surgery and requires no stay. i pay for the doctor experience. Indeed we need to be careful in the doctor we choose. Yet i am not prepared to be a study subject in some govt hosp. No Thanks. I want my problem to be resolved asap with no side effects.

Thanks for sharing, yes indeed if you ever go to Govt hosp with a complex symptoms be prepared to be poked and poked and poked ... from 2007 till 2011 Jan my family member was having stomach pains. They keep telling my family member live with the problem. It came to the point they told my family member that it is all in ur mind. (guess doctors also living in matrix world)

Doctor in hospitals have many levels, general doc, registrar and consultant. The head consultant finally spoke to my family member and told her....Ms there is nothing wrong with you and maybe it is all in your mind.

I told my family member fine...lets not waste anymore time. While she suffered in pain. i went to Gleneagles and picked on a specialist.

It took 2 visits and the problem was resolved in a day surgery that lasted less than 2 hours !

Can u imagine the pains she had to endured because we have FAITH in the damn system.

Yes Go buy full hosp insurance covering private hosp ! very important
