Watching a lower resolution broadcast than what the TV is intended for will always give you less detail especially if you try to magnify the picture with even larger screens (like in your case a 50" screen).

However if you watch a lot of BR and/or 1080p streaming media from an internet or media device then you should get a Full HD TV.

Bear in mind that there's no point in getting a 50" screen if your room is tiny or you sit really close to the screen. Not only do you need to pan your head to see end to end, but you're wasting a lot of power and "visual estate" like that. Furthermore, you will be watching pixels play with each other going on and off and changing colours than actually watching something.

You have to be at least 10 metres or more away from the big screen to appreciate 1080p.

singapore TV shows suck really big time, they were very outdated. the HD shows they broadcast are usually 1080i.

no need 10 meters, 3 meters i will notice the different, who will put their TV 10 meters away?

i am not those pixel creeper, even my relatives who are not really technical, they know if i am watching DVD or BD.
    Objection !!!

That's better than Australia I think and yeah interlaced not progressive broadcast.

The point is that you are not supposed to notice the difference in terms of pixel peeping because it just looks grainy close up, just the overall picture quality when you sit at the right distance. Full HD TVs wasn't quite there the last time I evaluated them and I still prefer projectors. Avatar BR on LED is probably the only amazing quality I've seen so far.

These samples are not conclusive but you can see a difference when comparing resolutions:

This was on the first 1080p TV I saw and bought back in 2006 and connected to a computer.

Please show proof that you need to sit 10m from a 50" screen. What is your source?

Otherwise stop misleading the other members here.

The proper distance for a 50" screen for Hi Def is less than 2.5m

For SD, it is closer to 3m.

Comparing resolution alone, as I mentioned is meaningless. The quality of the TV and the viewing distance are important considerations.

To those following this thread - read each post with care. There are too many misleading statements!

    Take care and read carefully.

OK 10 metres may be a stretch but it's certainly not less than 2.5 metres. The recommended distance is 5-6 metres for a 50 inch screen but I'd advice people to sit even further back for health reasons as well. I sit about 3.5 metres away from my 37" 1080p TV, I like my pictures better that way.

But by all means read other people's feedback on the matter, everyone's different. I also have a theater room with a 100" 16:9 screen.

As I said before bro, where is your source???
Otherwise please stop misleading the readers.

I have quoted a thread with proper scientific evidence in the thread.

What you think or prefer is personal. But if there is no basis, then its wrong to state it as a fact.

haa just a quick update and thanks to everyone's contribution

I just pulled the trigger yesterday and bought the LG PJ350 42inch Plasma for $649, cheapest price for a 42inch nowadays I think, at least for established brands (not including akira/palladine and the likes).

Watched some HD content and SD TV broadcast material on the Plasma and it looked good. Although it is not Full HD1080p (HD ready), I guess I'm not going to be pixel peeping when watching movies, whether on blueray or DVD, so this is good enough for me

Another bonus is that it also comes with USB input to read images and mp3, and even some video formats, can't wait for it to be delivered this friday hehe....

Still uisng my 2 year old 42" jpn made V series Panasonic Plasma. Still working well & also really enjoy viewing my photo shots with it directly from the SD card slot.

Only regret that I did not get the 50", so now just have to wait until this great set "retire" b4 I can get the 50" :-)
