Talking Newbie saying Hi.. Need advice on Photo

    Hi all,

decided one fine day that I've had enough with my Point n shoot so I picked up the Canon 550D along with the new hobby of photography..

Hope to learn lots from everybody here and to share knowledge when I accquire it.

To start off, I took this shot when I brought my 2 nieces to one of these indoor playgrounds. There's nothing quite like capturing unposed expressions (esp. those of joy).

My settings: 1/200, f6.3 at ISO3200. I did not use the auto sports mode. So I set to the multi-shot drive mode manually (but forgot to set AF to servo).

Maybe that's why my subjects look too dark and out of focus. Also I was not quite sure on how to deal with the strong background light... (fill flash maybe?).

Appreciate advise from all.. thanks.. =)

    HAlOo Welcome to CS ^^

The above Photo look very noise & not very Focal wor. Maybe u can reduce the ISO to 400 & increase your Exposure value by 1 or 2 stop

Increasing exposure has to come from somewhere. It will either affect shutter speed, aperture or ISO.

TS, you need to learn how to meter for the dark areas instead of allowing the camera to include the background light. Or, use a fill flash.

For focus, I suggest pre-focusing on the spot where the kids will come out.

    Hi Cadefox..

    thanks for your reply..

I tried reducing the ISO but the background light is causing my subjects to be Silhouetted. I thought I could have reduced my shutter speed to 1/100.. but what do you mean by increasing the exposure value?

    Thanks

I agree with bro Rashkae, increasing exposure has to come from somewhere.
At 1/200s, f/6.3 and ISO 3200, dropping to ISO 400 as suggested is a 3 stop decrease in exposure and if you increase EV by 1, that means you have to compensate a total of 4 stops on your shutter speed, aperture size or both. If you're limited by shutter speed and aperture size then I think fill flash would be the way to go.

WeeLong So let said Shutter Speed 1/50 , Aperture 5.6, ISO 400 is another correct Exposure but u will still get silhouetted subject becos of the haste back light behind, So now u increase your Exposure value to 1 or 2 stop (Try & Error)
This will cause both the subject & the background to light up.

I disagree with this. The only thing that will happen is that the camera will slow down the shutter speed, causing motion blur.

I suggest switching to Tv mode, setthe shutter speed to 1/125s to help freeze motion, and let your camera decide the ISO (or just try 1600 and 3200). Prefocus on a good spot, and make sure you know how to use centre-weighted metering.

    Hi all,

thanks for all the advice and comments.

    juz a few more questions:

    1) Regarding EV setting, am I right to say that if you adjust it, the camera will automatically try to compensate the other settings likes shutter speed and ISO to achieve your set EV setting?

    2) If I were to use fill-flash, I suppose I'll have to get a hot-shoe flash-gun to bounce the flash? Will a flash diffuser work?

appreciate all the patience and help from the oldbies.. =)

Yes a flash will improve the overall exposure by making the subject brighter.
It will you you the flexibility to increase speed, reduce apeture and ISO.
This will make the subject brighter in comparison to the background.
A flash diffuser will help. Try other angles to avoid the bright background.

Hi Cleonbus, you meant that discussions or critique for photos should be done in the photo gallery section?
