    Default carcam

what's the best kind of camera to permanently place in a car? shouldn't be too cumbersome to use. preferably small, starts up and shoots fast.

put in the car wouldn't it be too hot sometimes? thought the best would be a camera handphone if you want to record down accidents etc..

I assume you mean digital. Tried once with an extra Casio Exilim that I had which I kept in the glove compartment. While there was no damage directly to the camera, the heat runs down the battery extra fast, and is probably not good for the overall health of the battery either. So when you eventually do need to use it, chances are, no power!!!

    My 2 cents.

thinking of something slightly more high tech, where i just press a button on the steering (like cruise control) and it takes a picture.

    Here's the spec I want:
    - Small footprint.
    - Covert.
    - Need cooling strategy.
    - Remote control mounted on steering.

    Ideas so far:
    - Exilim meets footprint
    - Modified IU cover with hole to expose shutter. Drill hole, extend casing in an existing cover.
    - Hope a gel pack, layering or something can cool down the camera.
    - Remote control?? No idea so far.

I think your gel pack strategy may not work. If you expose the gel pack long enough to heat, it will still rise to the ambient temperature, and then will keep the camera at a higher temperature for longer after that. So you back to square one. And then there is the matter of charging the camera if it is permanently mounted...

Sounds like some James Bond-type project here. What's your car number, must remember not to cut you off in traffic.
