How would you feel if you wake up tomorrow and see this headline in the papers:

"Fernando Torres did a Rooney, and pledge his future to Liverpool Football Club by signing a new 5 years contract that will keep him at the club till Jan 2016."

Chelsea to kick-start £100m spending spree with Torres capture

Published 23:00 29/01/11 By Paul Smith

Roman Abramovich is personally funding £100 million-worth of Chelsea transfer spending.

The Russian billionaire is behind Chelsea’s bid to sign Fernando Torres from Liverpool and is taking a much bigger role in the Blues’ other transfer targets.

Liverpool insiders believe the projected deal will go through before Monday’s transfer deadline.

Abramovich does not want to burden the club with unnecessary debt.
    Quantcast

But he will provide the funds to rebuild the ageing squad and alter plans to streamline Chelsea’s spending and ensure they make severe cutbacks.

Barely a year ago Chelsea maintained the days of lavish spending were at an end and the club would not invest more than £20 million on a marquee signings or pay wages exceeding £80,000 a-week.

Yet Torres' transfer is set to cost the Blues around £50 million, signing a five year deal on £170,000 a week.

After taking over Chelsea in 2003 Abramovich spent £240 million in under two years to strengthen an underachieving squad in an attempt to bring overdue success to Stamford Bridge.

His last major indulgence in the transfer market came in 2006 when he personally laid out £31 million to secure the signing of AC Milan’s Andrei Shevchenko.

Torres told Anfield team-mate of his desire to quit

Published 23:05 29/01/11 By People Sport

Fernando Torres informed one man at Anfield of his decision to leave Liverpool BEFORE he handed in his transfer request....skipper Steven Gerrard.

Torres, edging closer last night to a £50million move to Chelsea, was desperate to let his team-mate know his intentions before he heard it via official channels.

Gerrard welcomed Torres with open arms when the Spaniard arrived on Merseyside in 2007 and felt he owed him the courtesy of face-to-face talks.

Mourinho's coming back! City and Liverpool on alert

Published 23:00 29/01/11 By Paul Smith

Jose Mourinho is on his way back to the Premier League.

And the Special One’s return to English football could come sooner than expected if the escalating boardroom war at Real Madrid fails to subside.

Mourinho’s return to these shores in the summer, if not before, is bound to leave a number of high profile managers anxiously looking over their shoulders - and here’s why.

Mourinho carries a guarantee of sparking instant success. He’s done that wherever he’s worked.

    Chelsea 'to net £45m Torres'

    By Steve Tongue, Football Correspondent

    Sunday, 30 January 2011

Chelsea will step up their attempt to sign Fernando Torres from Liverpool in the most expensive transfer between two British clubs before tomorrow's 11pm deadline. Although Chelsea's manager, Carlo Ancelotti, refused to discuss the bid after yesterday's 1-1 draw at Everton in the FA Cup, they could offer £45 million, with or without the England Under-21 forward Daniel Sturridge.

Liverpool are determined to hang on to their World Cup-winning striker at least until the summer, when a £50m release clause in his contract is understood to kick in. If, as expected, they have not qualified for the Champions' League, Torres will be more determined to force a move. His club were shocked when he made a formal request to leave on Friday, just as they signed Luis Suarez from Ajax with their season brightening under caretaker-manager Kenny Dalglish. Torres was one of several players who appeared rejuvenated by Dalglish's appointment.

Significantly, the striker's one outstanding performance in the first half of the season came when he scored both goals in a 2-0 win at Anfield over Chelsea, whose keenness to sign him was redoubled. They know they can offer what he most desires – Champions' League football – and he would be eligible for the knockout stages of this season's competition.

If he stays until summer, Torres will face an awkward few months with Liverpool's hitherto adoring supporters, now that he has made his true feelings known. "Get out now" was one comment on the official club website yesterday. The club's statement late on Friday said: "Fernando Torres submitted a written transfer request, which has been rejected."

Liverpool also have to decide whether to increase their bid for Charlie Adam, the captain of Blackpool, who say they have only been offered £4m, not the £6.5m widely quoted. In today's Independent on Sunday, Blackpool's manager, Ian Holloway, reveals the background to the controversy stirred up in midweek about his entitlement to a percentage of any profit made on transfers.

"It is a standard management contract," he writes. "The chairman told me I had improved the players so much that he wanted it to apply to any one of them that we made money on – so it's not just Charlie, it is everyone. That's been there for ages."
