Default Sony T1 opinions and LCD Screen CRACKED!

Hi,
this is my first posting here.
Thought I'd share with you about my an incident.

I have the black T1 as a fun camera.
Its a great one to use with low lag time and nice screen. The underwater housing is fantastic.

It feels pretty solid and looks impressive. The video at 30 FPS- excellent!

Weaknesses:
1. Flash sucks. It doesnt' matter what people say about adjusting the ISO, increasing the exposure etc.
2. Peripherals cost an arm and a leg- eg battery charger to charge the (ouch) second battery, memory stick pro-duo(double ouch)
3. Fragile!!!

Here is why i have decided to post this thread.

I dropped my mobile phone on the screen of the camera while sitting on a couch.
To my horror, it cracked but did not splinter because of the screen protector.
Brought it to Sony at Wisma Atria.
They were very professional and nice. With a big smile, said that the screen repair would cost $416. Almost dislocated my jaw when it dropped. Thats more than half the cost of what i paid!!!
They told me that there are few things that will cost alot to repair.
LCD, Lens and mother board.
Add this all together, you might afford an 828.
I managed to grovel for a 20% discount. With repairs this price, the few friends whom i had recommended the camera to would no doubt be queueing up to kill me!
I must say that the saving grace is that the people are professional and courteous. They oblige you with a discount, understanding your dilemma. I'd spent >$1k on peripherals already. there was no way i could dump the camera!
Having said that, i'm not sure if the cost for an equivalent exslim or subcompact camera would be as prohibitive.

hope this is useful in helping others make a decision on purchasing the product!

As a rule...servicing of any product (not only sony) after its warranty or due to misuse/mishap is expensive. I was thinking of servicing my faulty IPAQ screen and gave up after some consideration due to the fact that it cost half the price of what i got whole thing for.

First of all, its very unfortunately that your phone has to drop on the "Bull's Eye". The repairs of electronic major components always costs a great deal -- the spare part itself and the labor involved for the specialist.
Since you've already spent so much on the accessories, you probably have a good camera bag to store all the gadgets right?

To all camera owners:
Always remember to keep your cherished digital camera in its resting place (invest in a good bag is important) when not in use. Accidents do happen.

the prices you got quotes aren't very surprising........and what the person told you is indeed true, the most expensive parts of a camera to repair/replace are the lens, lcd, chip.......

you can somwhat compare this to your computer.......the most expensive components to replace woule be your cpu, lcd moniter and optical drives..

Thanks for your valuable information.

I believe other users using products like Nikon, Panasonic, Canon and etc, would have to pay a certain amount of cost if they accidentally break their LCD screen.

But most importantly, under this circumstance, would Nikon, Panasonic, Canon customer service came to our help with professional and courteous assistance, with a solution and honest answer . or just dun care, dun know, rude service.
I believe this is what it counts at the end of the day.

Wink Cracked screen

thanks guys and sorry for the late reply.
i got the camera back before leaving on my trip. service was still good and fast. they returned the broken lens, which i dumped.
to answer some of the questions, yes, i do have a case for everything. am usually pretty anal about my camera equipment. The little fella goes into the dry cabinet along with my contax G system, minolta TC-1, ginseng, green tea from china, etc....
lesson learnt! Very expensive!
