Default What's similar in Nikon list to Canon 40D/50D?

Hi, I'm currently looking to upgrade but I'm not familiar with any Nikon range of DSLRs. Also not been updating myself regularly now. Budget $1200 for just Body and Kit lens. Reason for this thought of change is really just 'Feel'

    Any recommendations?

    Thanks in advance People!

Here is the price based on last SITEX 2010 list:

    D3100 + 18-55 VR: $999
    D5000 + 18-55 VR: $1099
    D90 + 18-105 VR : $1688

With $1200, you only could get a new set D5000 kit. Or 2nd hand of D90, if you are lucky to get the good condition one.
    NIKON D90 (2008-2010), D700 (2010-2012), D800 (2012-2014), DF (Dec 2013-Sep 2017)

D300? I'm looking for 2nd hand models mostly. I don't think i'll get the Dxxxx series. Thought of D90 or D300

A d90 is at best at 850 tops now in BnS. Dont get ripped off since the sellers are aplenty.

I've heard from many the ergonomics of d300 trumps the d90, but this is something only you can answer. I myself own a d90, an upgrade from 500D. Loving it to bits

My next upgrade, in a few years will definitely be a FF. I dont need FPS at all.

My 400D served me well and will be someone's on tuesday. So in my case, an upgrade from 400D to D90 would be May i ask why did you get the D90 instead of D300? Or did you consider D300 at all?

For canon i'm looking at 40D or 50D

For Canon system, you are looking at EOS 40D or EOS 50D right ? I think your main preference is the built quality and ergonomics of the body. But I see in your first post that your budget is limited to $1200 only for both body and lens.

I have seen some threads in B&S selling the old D300 for $1400 for body only without lens.
With such a limited budget, I am afraid that you only could afford the 2nd hand of D90.

Here is some reference of D300 price from the 2nd hand market:

If you could raise your budget to $1700, go to the 2nd hand of D300+kit

do note that the d300 is heavier compared to d90, since it's bigger and it has a magnesium alloy body. d90's body is purely made of polycarbonate. d300 has better ergonomics over d90, tat's for sure.

if u dun mind the weight, d300 is more of a worthy upgrade to u over the d90, since the ergonomics r pretty similar to higher end bodies like the d700, n also nt forgettin the amount of features d300 has over d90. in terms of IQ, i'd say both r pretty similar, altho d90 might be better at higher iso range. d300's pictures r less processed compared to the d90 too. the fps is also higher than d90, AF points alot more (51 AF points on d300 compared to 11 AF points on d90) and faster AF speed (altho the lens makes up for the speed too). n also not forgettin custom shooting menu banks and AF fine tune feature on the d300 that d90 doesnt have.

these r the main features d300 has over d90 that i can tink of. if others can tink of more over the d90, feel free to add on.

however, at the end of the day, it all matters whether u find these features useful, and the extra spending + extra weight is worth it for u. a 2nd hand d300 cost around 1.1k to 1.5k i guess, from wad i saw in the BnS section a few weeks ago.

Thanks for all your opinions! It really helped me in deciding whether to stay or jump to Nikon. After using google so much more than i've ever used, i've decided to stay with Canon. But still, thanks alot for helping me out!
