I don't think there is a universal lens hood..
Firstly, the focal length of those lens as well as the filter diameter are different, so they will need diff lens hood..
the 70-200mm L f4 or 2.8 lens does come with a lens hood.

u have to buy a lens hood according to the thread size. ie. - canon EF 50mm f1.8 is a 52mm thread. so, u have to looking for (a) the original canon lens hood, or (b) the generic collapsing rubber hoods.

do be careful on using lens hood on zooms as they will cause vignetting (a dark circle on the borders of ur pics). i kenna once and din know until i downloaded it...

Default lens hood for 300D kit lens

I bought one for my 300D kit lens. The result of the image is good.
Model for the lens hood is EW-60C. I have a hard time looking for it.

not necessary but better to have it to avoid the flare.

haha... i'm entitled to screw up once in a while, okie... '

anyway, will03, its good to have a hood. in fact, some of the pros here will definitely say its a must to have. i know some shooters here won't shoot without one, and it does help to prevent lens flare. also, it acts an addition protection for ur lens in case of accidental bumps and drops.

pros
1. Nicer pic with no flare
2. Nicer dressing for the camera
3. Better protection for lens
4. better protection agains dust (specifically applicable for 24-70)

cons
1. Troublesome
2. Attention grabbing...

Can't the UV filter serve the same?

ya, i paid only $5 for my 52mm hood. it is cheap and very soft. the cons is quite troublesome when u need to change filter, if not, it is pretty cool.

UV filter to me is just to protect the my lens and somehow it improve the warmness of my image, not to avoid the flare while CP help to prevent the reflection but it is for the subject, not for the lens itself.

get one and shoot into the sun and u will know how the hood will help u.

cheers!

Flare is not reduced by the hood when you're shooting into the sun, or when there is a direct light source in the picture. It reduces flare only when outside light sources (not in the picture) that would have struck the surface of the lens are blocked out.

UV filter increases flare. It simply adds two more surfaces (front and back) which potentially can flare or ghost. At best, it does not add to the flare, but certainly does not cut flare in any way.
