50mm Lens, is it worth to buy

Hi,

is it worth to buy to a 50mm, f1.8 single lens?

or should i buy other type of lens,, (but i got $$$ Constrain, dun want to pay too much)

at $140 is its one of canon's cheapest lenses. if you can spare the cash i think it's a pretty good value lens to get.

guess it really depends on your shooting style.. i for one like the zoom more than prime ..

but that aside, yes, 50mm 1.8 is a great lens.

Hi Guys, no need to try. Go get it! You won't regret a bit of it. Here are the reasons why this lens is a MUST buy:

1. Cheapest canon lens
2. Very sharp picture output
3. Very light
4. Very fast @ f/1.8
5. Diameter of lens small @ 52mm, so filter also cheaper!
6. Extermely good for portraits, especially fashion shoots and low light. If using digital SLR, largi best, cost 52mm becomes 83mm: a portrait lens!

I bought it 2nd hand @ $100. Never regret a bit of it. Always in my camera bag!

So long you're not thinking of getting the 50 f1.0L The others are quite worth buying, esp the f1.8 version.

As for using it for portraits, good for half body. Even on DSLR, I will still use a 85 or 100mm lenses for close up (face) shots because of the perspective. Though with the FLM, 50mm becomes 85mm or 90mm, the perspective does not change and not very flattering to the subject for face shots.

50mm f/1.0? I where got so rich! I think for amateurs, the 1.8 is enough for most usage, although the f/1.4's bokeh is much better.

Thanx. Internal flash won't give you this effect. You got to use external flash.

That's half body shot. Try face only with a 50mm...

In my point of view, I try not to take head and shoulder shots with portrait orientation.

For flash, it's again my good old omnibounce.

50mm is not to be used for shoulder-up shots. only 85 and above. but i would recommend anything above 100.

Perspective is a function of distance. Who is to argue if you are going to shoot further and leave more space in the frame or even crop.

try using a 50 and fill the entire frame with just the face.
