Anyone out there who has got the D100 for 2 years and thinking of upgrading or move on to the new D70?
In any case, the D100 is a good camera, but after 2 years, the D70 has got quite a few improvements over the older camera. The point is whether those improvements merits a change, and fork out a few hundred bucks to get the lastest and new camera. Or wait for the replacement of the D100, which should be arriving anytime now. It could have full-frame sensor, or other goodies from the D2H due the the acceleration of technology. ![]() |

I'd doubt Nikon is moving towards full frame with the development of the DX lenses. But bear in mind if they do produce a full frame with frame rate of the D2H the price will probably be at least 5-6 times the price of a new D70. Cross-ref to the 1Ds -->~12k
imagine 1Ds with 8fps continuous drive mode. Probably 16k++ ![]()

What I have in mind is a slower camera, not like the blazing speed D2H. And maybe, a low 4.3Mp sensor that is full-frame. I think a 4.3Mp sensor with FF would give you great picture quality already. And at a reasonable price of say 4k, it would be wonderful!

Going from a D100 to a D70 will be an instant downgrade.

In terms of usability and feel. D100 has all the main (and most important) shooting features all laid out for quick access- no messing with LCD menus. Body feels more sturdy and made more so if used together with MB D100.
Poor Auto WB? Slower shutter speed? I'll live with that...... The real killer of the D70 package is actually the kit lens. Wonderful! |

I am actually considering seriously to get the D100 despite the overwhelming recommendations for the D70 by many reviewers, magazines etc. My first impression of the D70 ain't that good, just feeling, touching and shooting it in the shop. My next step is to try out the D100. Just playing with it for 10 minutes or so, I will decide. Besides, if I were not mistaken, the D100 price has dropped quite a bit since the arrival of the D70. Time to go for it. |

[quote=Zerstorer]Which important features are better laid out on the D100 compared to the D70?
All ur basic photography needs are within easy reach, WB, ISO etc etc. For those who know wat they are doing, want to know what they are doing and/or already have a range of nikon lens to work on, definately D100. |

The only control that is different is the AF-C switch, which the D70 doesn't have. |

Just stating some personal opinions and comparitively i find D100 more user friendly (and may i also put plainly - less of a toy) after using both cams. No intention to mis-guide anyone, besides majority of folk who frequent these froms would have to be VERY misguided (considering the mass of information) to make a S$2k mistake. ![]() |

If you find switching the mode dial of the D100 into and out of the exposure modes just to access the ISO/WB settings easier, then its fine. However I do believe that most would appreciate being able to access both functions directly without switching in and out of the exposure modes or going into the menu system. D100 ->Switch mode dial to ISO/WB ->adjust ISO/WB ->switch mode back to exposure modes D70 ->Press respective direct access button and vary using main/sub command dials |

There are some good feature in D100 which D70 do not have,
and also are also good feature in D70 which D100 do not have. It is a hanging in between at this stage. |

D70 has the super fast file write times and continuous shooting on fast cards that are missing on the D100. This might be important to some.

I will take the D70 anytime for the feature : price perspective
Though it's made of plastic, it had been proven to withstand drop from 10 ft and still functioning well (from Thom Hogan) It had 1/8000 shutter speed (color shift addressed with latest firmware), supports the latest CLS flash system and not to mention the 3 FPS for up to continuous 144 frames. It's menu is equally friendly and assessible (yup, I have handled both before) compared to D100. It's not a D100 replacement but definitely spots a few enhancement over D100 in terms of CCD make, auto-focus & metering system etc. It's lighter and makes a good travel camera. It's value for money. What else can one asks for? I have friends who had the D2H and guess what? They buy the D70 as backup bodies and not D100. But in the end, both are good cameras from Nikon but for value : price ratio, D100 cannot match the D70. It's my opinion; you can shoot me for all you want but the massive D70 users out there won't change the fact at all. Why are more and more people buying the D70 then? ![]() |

Of course. The D70 is definitely somewhat superior in some sense over the D100, it's not a D100 strip down (unlike some other brands...
). It makes no sense to use similar technology to produce a market for beginners, right? But take note, the D100 is 2 years old, it has fought on side with the D30, D60 till the 10D, the D70's ultimate goal is to fight with the 300D rebel, which I think it's a joke, because Nikon will need to produce something lesser than D70 to fight with 300D. The D70 is just a prelude to the D100's replacement, of which I'm dying to see what's the interesting result going to be... ![]() Oh yeah.. if I have to choose, I'd take the D100 over and over again, till of course, I'm rich enough to go higher ends ![]() |
