Default Canon EF 24-70 F2.8L Question

Just got my 24-70 yesterday, and was running a couple of test since then.

I've found that the AF of this lens to be slow, as compare to my 17-40, even the comsumer lens 28-135 IS. Anyone had this lens before? did you share the same experience?

According to a friend, this lens is not meant for sport photography therefore Canon compromise the speed for cost efficiency. But one think I've notice is that the AF scale meter did not spin as smoothly as it did on my other lens, and the AF meter spin beyond infinity mark when it tries to focus on infinity. Anyone got any idea on this?

I didn't get to test out other copy of the lens as I did not get tis lens from a shop , and I'm using a Canon 300D body. Anyone with similar setup?

thanks in advance.
Regards.

mine is just as fast as the 16-35 when using film body, the EOS3. the AF speed drops significantly when comes to digital bodies.

I used my EF 24-70mm f/2.8L on my 300D body for a couple of months, and young the AF speed to be one of the fastest. It is on no way slower than my EF 17-40mm f/4L.

Room lighting.

When focusing on subject with high contrast, it does not hunt. but the duration it takes to obtain focus takes much longer than my 28-135 IS.

When I focus on an entire white wall to let it hunt, it hunt much slower than my 28-135 IS which have a focus meter of up to 10m, the 24-70 have up to 3m.

Wandering what is wrong

If the 28-135 outperforms the 24-70 L in terms of speed of AF, I cant imagine what the market repercussion will be. This is just preposterous.

So far owners of these lens have never complained about the AF speed of this lens and perhaps on a broad day light on sunday take a few pic to test out

Focusing on the wall was intentionally to see how long it takes to do a full two sided hunt... but it only hunt one side?... hmm..

Could you do a rough test, maybe take an average of 3 timings to focus on high contrast/low contrast object and post here? At least we will have a frame of reference to help you.

Cheers,

Try some test shots tomorrow. If this lens is really slower than the 28-135 then there is likely some defect. Imagine a Corolla outpace a Porshe.

Then u have to check into the Canon clinic.

Anyone free to meet up tomorrow over a cup of coffee (on me)? would REALLY like to benchmark my copy against yours... pls?... anyone?...

PM me or SMS me at 98475337. I'm free anytime, anywhere that please you.

Dunno how to post pic for comparison here...
but the speed with mine 24-70 is like... 1-2-3-Focus
while the 28-135 is like 1-2-Focus...

I don't know what's wrong with your 24-70. I have a 24-70 and it is EASILY the fastest focusing lens I own - it's even faster than the 28-135IS (which I own, too).
