It really depends on whether which produces more undesirable results, effects of diffraction at small apertures or not using settings for the correct hyperfocal distance. Those are just technicalities, if you take circumstances like moving elements, its another story altogether.

A question....at 105mm....what was the shutter speed you shot with that caused your "not sharp" images?

    Agreed 100%

The other issue is making snap judgments based on lens tests, which necessarily go to great lengths to find the weaknesses that are rarely visible in real photos (unless you really intend to shoot test charts!).

This is a quick 2 min search in Flickr and I grabbed a few links at random...

hahaha don't waste time with ignorant ppl, bro!
If they wanna spend more on lenses that are 'superior', all the better for the economy!

The 16-85mm is the better lens of the two that is why is abt double the price at $1169 http://www.nikon.com.sg/productitem....218-a6b9250679 even though the zoom is lesser

    Lousy??
Don't just look at the Verdict.
Look at the analysis and sample shots.

From Pg2 (Analysis) of the same photozone site you posted:
    "MTF (resolution)
The lens produced impressive resolution figures in the lab. At 18mm the center and border deliver excellent resolution already at wide open aperture, the extreme borders follow closely with very good resolution throughout the measured aperture range. At 24mm the very high level is maintained. At slightly closed apertures even the extreme borders reach an excellent level. The resolution in the center stays in the excellent range for the whole remaining focal range, only at 105 mm the border resolution drops a little but still gives very good figures.
    "

A MTF figure of 1980LW/PHH f5.6 at 105mm is really good for a zoom at its price point.
Certainly very nice shots from samples I've seen from my friend's D90 with this lens as well.

dunno if Mr DM101 would be able to post some examples of 'better' images produced by 16-85, which I assume he owns... otherwise all the claims of lousy/better, etc are just hot air...

If you really think that way... My condolences.

Come come... show us the excellent pictures YOU took with the 16-85

KRW also say 18-55 is one of the best lens out there... so how? dump your 16-85 and get a 18-55?

I rather put my money with photozone... and they did say it is an excellent lens at its price range... and it is selling almost brand new at about $300. Very good value I say.

Just ignore such people, there might be a chance I am interested in a "lousy" lens they have and buy from them at a cheap rate. After all, it is "lousy" why not give it to me free if you don't use it
