Have anyone tested the CompactDrive Device which is a HDD for CF storage and a battery charger for AA type? How reliable is the transfer of the data from CF to the HDD?

I would like to know how long the charger for the CompactDrive Device takes to charge 4 pcs of 2300MAH batteries?

Furthermore, can the PC detect the HDD via USB without using any AC power supply or battery on the unit?

Any feedback is appreciated.

I have yet to encounter errors during CF to HDD transfer. It's really fast. I brought 1 overseas and transferred 5 512mb cards to the hard disk on a single set of 4 batteries. The battery bar was still at 2/3 after that. I'm sure it can do quite a bit more transfers.

The transfer from compactdrive to PC is a bit slow though. It's an external drive and you can't enable DMA on it, at least not on win98.

I've used it with the PC as an external HDD with battery power alone.

So does that mean that the HDD will not be able to work without having either the AA battery or the AC power connected when using the HDD as a external HDD?

By the way, have you got a chance to test out the charging duration of the unit with 4 x 2300MAH batteries?

I read in the forum that this device display in Chinese? Or is it the manual are in chinese but the display in the unit are still in English? Things such as [Copy], [Format Card], etc ...

It's in chinese, but just look at the smiley face and you'll know the transfer had no errors. I can't read chinese at all but have no problems using it. The charger is a slow type, for charging overnight. You should use it as a backup charger but bring another quick charger along. And you need some kind of power source to use it as an external hdd.

And there's only one button to press, which copies from card to hdd. You can't format the hard disk or card from this reader.

I believe its expandable. U can look at the maximum size of HDD which it can accept and get a 2.5" laptop HDD and install it urself.

Installation, I believe, shld be a no-brainer.

Our first batch of CompactDrive is sold out, thanks for the overwhelming response. New stock will come in late this month.

There are still a few pieces 40GB & 60GB model left at Alan Photo (#01-38 Sim Lim Square).

Unfortunately no, they have the 40GB & 60GB models.
