Nikkor 24-120 AFS VR - opinions?

Anyone who has this lens care to share your thoughts on it? I've read a ton of reviews / opinions on the net and there seems to be a lot of conflicting views.

Used to own it for some time before flying it off.

Good starter and generic purpose lense IMO. Reasonably good quality for a modest price. AF is quite fast (compared with non-AFS, but not the fastest in the AFS family), and VR helps in low light situation.

There is some talk about this lense some time back if I don't remember wrongly, do a search in the forum.

There is a thread, go search for the user nick 'Matrix' that asked about 24-120VR, some pretty good comments & reviews were inside.

I have this lens and it works beautifully kicking me off on the route of SLR, at 24-120 it offers me a just nice view of 36mm which is near the normal 135 format view. The VR is ideal in low light shooting, I've used it at Chinatown during Chinese New Year to capture the ambience as low as 1/8s. AF is definitely not the fastest as AJ23 has mentioned, but it's a good len on it's own, replacing the older AF 24-120D. Slight softness but nothing really to keep griping about.

If you ask me for the functionality and design against the cost, I'd only say it's a wonderful piece of equipment for it's price & quality that it can deliver. If you don't mind, there are two other similar equipments lesser than the price of a 24-120VR = AF-S 24-85 f/3.5-4.5 and the older AF 28-105D f/3.5-4.5.

Definitely worth the money for the AF-S 24-120VR.
