for me, I stay with using the original batteries.
If it is battery grip, that is something else all together.

there is a difference, but you have to make a choice as to whether you're willing to pay the additional costs for an original battery. you do get better capacity, perhaps better retention of capacity over time.. for the most part, but as with all other things, quality comes at an exponential price.

Hi TS, so far besides the original Canon batteries, the only 3rd party brand that I've used is Phottix.

It supposedly has a higher battery capacity, and cost only a fraction of the ordinal battery too! My opinion is I'd rather buy 4 Phottix batteries than 1 original for the same price, and it comes with 1 year warranty as well.

I am using a phottix for my D80 in addition to the original battery. Must say that it does not hold the charge as well as the original. Also, in storage, the phottix loses its charge fairly quickly and the original still shows full bar after storage of the same length.

Emm..in short, original batt is the best? rite? Phottix selling at a price of $24 and original batt from CP is $60. Think wat I get is wat I pay for...I can't expect too much from a 3party batt

I agree with this, but i always charge my battery the night before i bring it out so no issue here and the bigger capacity make it last longer on the day of the shoot it self

it depends. if price difference between original and third party is like $50~$100 and above, its third party for me.

if the battery price difference is like less then $30, will go for the original.

battery grips that have AA i think is the best solution. The Pentax Kx is a good idea...dslr but using AA batteries.

Just to share with u my experience, i'm using a phottix battery grip, so obviously i'll need two batteries. and since the price of third party batts are good, i use one original and one third party batt.

I dont see any problems with third party batts except that occasionally the cam controls will "hang". Not really "hang" just that i cannot control the apeture and shutter settings using the dial. I used to panic when this happens.

But the problem will be solved when i remove the battery grip, and jus use the camera as it is with one battery.

For you, i guess this shouldnt happen to u as i dont encounter camera getting "hang" when i use third party battery without battery grip.

Just for ur info thats all, dont panic : )

There's some comments in the past that original batteries are more lasting than third party ones under low temperature environments. How true that is, I have no idea. I also use a mix of original and third-party (Phottix) batteries. Both are good enough for me but I didn't really bother to monitor the performance of each one.

it's not hang actually it's only that ur main dial didn't work, u don't need to remove the grip, just scrool the dial at ur grip and the main dial will work fine again and usually it only "might" happen after u change the battery

yeah... you're right. It might seem like 100% more, but if in real dollars it's $30 - $40 then I think that's an acceptable price difference if indeed the quality is better.
    Exploring! :)

I can tell you that for the price, phottix batt is really worth the price. It lasts as long if not longer than the originals. I use my original only as a spare.
    Looking for Canon 100mm F2 USM :)

Using 3rd party batts and original batt alternatively. Sofar, so good. The 3rd party batts can last long as well due to the higher capacity.
