We are hearing about Antonio Cassano (again). Sources suggest he is ready to sign for Liverpool.

16 Conclusions On Spurs v Liverpool
    Posted 28/11/10 19:02

Might Tottenham's proclivity for falling behind bite them at some point...?

    * They keep on doing it, don't they? That win took Tottenham's total of points won from behind this season to 16. Everton, who finished top of that particular table last season, got 17 points from the whole season.

    * We have praised Tottenham's resilience this season, but the flip side of that praise is that they have to keep going behind to show it off - Sunday was the 12th time in 23 games this season that they have conceded the first goal, and they've only kept three clean sheets. Sooner or later, it's going to seriously bite them in the behind.

    * They're entertaining though. Since the goalless draw with Manchester City on the opening day, 78 goals have been scored in games involving Spurs.

    * Oh for a reliable penalty taker though. Jermain Defoe became the fourth man to miss from the spot this season for Tottenham, joining Gareth Bale (Werder Bremen), Rafa van der Vaart (Twente) and Roman Pavlyuchenko (Blackburn). Possibly by coincidence, none of those misses have cost Spurs any points.

    * With a bit of luck, this will now convince those who still raise the 'Champions League hangover' that Spurs appear to have got over that particular problem. Their post-Champions League game record now reads played five, won three, drawn one and lost one.

    * Even by his slightly lacklustre standards this season, Wilson Palacios had a shocking game. He gave the ball away constantly (especially in the first half), and while we're happy to be corrected, by our reckoning he won the ball for the first time in the 40th minute.

    * One last word on Spurs. They won this game without their first-choice centre-back pairing, their first-choice right-back, first-choice holding midfielder and with their best striker still half-fit and unable to start. And then lost this season's creative inspiration to injury in this game. And still they're a point off the Champions League qualification places, and look likely to finish above the current holders in the group stage of this season's competition. Not bad.

    * Liverpool employed very similar tactics as they did against Chelsea, by displaying some degree of attacking intent in the first half, then stepping back a little and relying on counter-attacks in the second. It didn't quite come off against Spurs, but since it was good enough to beat the reigning champions, it's difficult to criticise Roy Hodgson. No doubt plenty will though.

    * While we don't wish to pre-empt the 'Roy Out' brigade, this loss should not strengthen their argument. The team was set up pretty well, most of the players did their jobs (Paul Konchesky apart), and it is no disgrace to lose to this Spurs team, as Inter Milan, Arsenal and eight others will tell you.

    * If one wanted a perfect example of the difference between an exceptional player and an adequate one, see the chance created by Fernando Torres for Maxi Rodriguez just before half-time. The turn/sccop pass from Torres through to Rodriguez was precise, unexpected and exquisite. The rather sad attempt at a finish was pathetic. Rodriguez had a number of options - the blast, the placed shot, the chip - but for reasons passing understanding tried to shimmy round Huerelho Gomes when five yards away from him, and quite comically fell over.

    * Having said that, it's a promising sign for Liverpool that the link-up between those two players is looking better and better. What was perhaps started by Maxi's goal against Bolton a few weeks ago continued today, with Torres playing more and more from the left, and interchanging rather nicely with his Argentinean colleague.

    * And having said that again, Torres did waste a couple of chances by dithering when clean through. Martin Tyler commented that when Torres was on 'A1' form, he would've scored, but how much longer does he need? We're now at the end of November, and Torres has been involved in every one of Liverpool's league games this season.

    * Raul Meireles looks a better player every time he plays for Liverpool, and it can hardly been seen as a coincidence that he looks more impressive when in the centre of midfield. So what does Hodgson do when Steven Gerrard returns? Does he shift Meireles back out wide, thus not making the best use of his players and opening him once again to one of the key criticisms of his reign? Or push Gerrard further forward and away from a role in which he has excelled at times this season?

In fact, it would be interesting to see them both in a two-man centre midfield. Both have attacking instincts, but equally both have enough discipline to not leave their defence exposed. It would perhaps be harsh on an improving Lucas Leiva, but it might be worth a go.

    * If Roy Hodgson's initial diagnosis is right and Jamie Carragher has indeed dislocated his shoulder, it will be a bigger blow for Liverpool than some think. Sure, he is slow and not the player he was a couple of years ago, but he still organises the defence and produces some magnificent kamikaze defending, resulting in goal line blocks such as that in the first half from Jermain Defoe. He did the same in the Chelsea game, and he will be missed.

    * One doesn't necessarily expect footballers to be Mensa candidates, but incidents like the one that gave Tottenham their penalty are especially brainless. If nothing else David Ngog should surely have taken notice of the Cesc Fabregas incident in the north London derby last weekend. The old 'I was protecting my face' excuse, although slightly more applicable than with Fabregas, doesn't really wash either - it's a football, not a bowling ball. For want of a more elegant phrase, man up.

    * It's juvenile, it's childish, it's many more words that essentially mean the same thing, but there really are few funnier things in football than a referee or linesman being knocked over.

With Gerrard and Carra both out injured, who is our next captain?
Who do you guys think should wear the armband in their absence?

I think RH will go with Reina.

I totally agree. With a cool head the next morning, how did we miss a couple of chances is a real shocker. How their first one went in.... shame about our defense that went to sleep for their second one.

Erm.. but that defender from Fulham..... it leaves a lot to be desired. Until RH's a** is on the line he is going to keep playing him costing us points.. The Portuguese guy looks promising, so not so bad... On the other hand Torres looks so dejected.... did they stop paying him!!!
