Default microdrive in F828?

Hi all, i'm planning to purchase a F828 within the week. Since it doesn't come with any media, I was considering purchasing a 1gb microdrive for it. What are the advantages of the microdrive over conventional cf cards? Also since there are moving parts in the drive, how does it affect battery performance?

All info will be greatly apreciated!

Main advantage is Meg/dollar... I got my 2.2G microdrive earlier this year at slightly more than 300. Good for money. And for F828, if you use microdrive or Sony memory stick, you can enjoy 640x480 at 30 fps movie! Neat!

The bad: If you drop it...it might not survive due to it moving parts like a real hdd..What i did is that I leave the microdrive in the camera all the time and never had once taken it out (I dun find the need to anyway). So unless u drop the camera *glurp*....chances is that its definitely worth it.

Thumbs up

It's Great!! Very useful to take video clips!! I bought the 2.2GB one for $290..and then bought a Hitachi 4GB one for $390..Value for money man..
Just that i realised it seems to write a bit slower when the cards are almost full..maybe its just me...

nope. its normal. the write speed is slower than type I CF cards. check out http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/mul...e.asp?cid=6007. MDs almost always comes out last. however, the disclaimer is that it might be due to the writing software of the camera involved. small price to pay for the massive storage space of the 4GB MD, IMO! i'm using it for my 300D, and never had to download onto my x-drive even on long shooting trips. i shoot in RAW some more!

and, pls... watever u do, DUN drop the MD!

This is probably due to file fragmentation. Like what is happening in your PC HDD..but its all normal. This is because segments of files are located around the MD's disc and the drive need to seek for them. As for normal CF..its basically all electical connections, thus they are faster in writing when the disk is full.

ok due to the 2mb/sec cap on the f828 is it safe to say that the difference in read and write speed, between cf cards and microdrives, will be almost non-existant?

also those of you running microdrives, is there a significant drop in battery performance when compared to normal cf cards?
