Want to use ultra cheap storage media instead? Go for Sony Mavica MVC CD200 (2.1M) or MVC CD300 (3.3M). They write directly onto cheap ordinary 5cm CD-R and CDRW disks which can then be read off the PC's cdrom or cdwriter drive directly. Good for travelling since you can bring a whole stack of blank CDRs or CDRWs with you and shoot to your heart's content.

I guess the trade-off to using a cd-rw/cd-r capable camera is the size and weight. Not too sure about writing speed though. If it's too slow compared to memory card, it could affect your photo-taking experience.

I have a Sony MVC300. It is pin-sharp because of the Carl Zeiss lens and the colour is outstanding. All in all, the picture quality is much better than that of my Nikon CoolPix 950.

Though it is not pocketable, it is also not at all heavy. Don't think that it any heavier than the 707. Recording speed is slightly slower than with CF, SM, or MS media but certainly does not affect my shooting experience one bit. Only thing it is not suitable for is action shots where you want to rattle off a few shots a second or a series of shots in fast succesion. I don't take action shots, so it doesn't matter at all to me.
One feature I like is that it would focus even in total darkness because it sends out a red colored light pattern to help in the focusing, similar to that of many SLRs.
So for me, the advantages far out weigh the disadvantages.

Thanks guys! For all your advices!!

I have decided to get a Canon G2 with a Microdrive.
For I have been spoiled by the quality and control of a SLR and a neg. and slide scanner...

I do know a 2+MP would be enough for 8x10 but I do happen to crop a lot ( Habit to leave lots of space ) so more would be better

A 1GB Microdrive would allow me ( and my parents ) to just simply shoot away without worry til we get home... ( Around 600+ images at high res in fine mode I think.. )
Don't have to worry about my parents ( and ME! ) losing the cards due to misplacement, malfunction ( after a spin or two in the washing machine after been left in the pocket.. )
Nay... more of me than my parents

Thanks again to sebastiansong for pointing me to this site..

WIll post some samples once I get the camera...

    Anthony

    Ok guys... back from shopping!

    As promised some shots....

All shots taken with the fully auto mode.. ( everything default )
    Resolution 2272x1704 fine mode resampled to 500 x 375 using photoshop ( bicubic )
Nothing else was done.. ( No leveling, sharpening.. )
Resaved as Jpeg setting high ( 70 )

    Virgin Shot - My dinner!

Ok so I said I would be skipping my fastfood... but...
    I was too hungry!
Last one for months to come..
I was so hungry, my hand can't stop shaking when I was taking the photo.
Flash was off. ( To test the white balancing. )
Not too bad as the lighting consist of fluorescent and halogen.. ( Mac at Funan )

Test shot of a human being

That's not me.. ( I am not so handsome.. )
Let's talk about the quality instead.
    Taken with auto flash..
Exposure not too bad.. considering the small flash..
    Noise level acceptable..
In the original photo, you can see moasic ( sp? ) patterns on his blue shirt..
    Other than that... pretty ok...

    What you guys think?
Oh yes, for those who worry about storage, the 1 GB microdrive seems to be able to take 910 2272x1704 in fine mode!! Wow...

    Anthony,
Happily playing with his new high-tech toy when.....
Darn... no more battery power!! Arghhhh!!!!

    G2 G2 G2... tats wat i am using too...
ermmm... pros and cons between slr and DC.....

dont expect too much from a $1k DC as most DC got slow focus .... even a eosD30 the focus still sux.. as i read from photo.net... i have not tried it before but nothings outbeat Film slr.

But on media wise DC win!!!!!!

If possible use a DSLR as ur current AF lens still can be use

    Why no extra battery?
    I need to eat dinner!!
Oh yes... seems to have completed charging... but was adviced to do a full charge the first time instead of 90%...

franciskc : Yup.. focus is slow.. even compared to my ancient Minolta 600si...
Anyway, this is supposed to be a family compact camera so..... oh well
WOuld love to have a digial SLR... but Minolta!! Oh where is that body coming!!!
Anyway as a student... I am really dry now!!

Wow.. really splash out a lot on this new baby huh?

    Enjoy your new toy...

Would advise you to get a spare battery becos one battery will be dry before the micro drive is not filled yet..

And a drybox will be a good investment for your $1840 "new toy"..

Ermm... comes with the normal accessories it should come with...
( Charger, battery, cords, 32MB CF, etc... )

The microdrive is actually a travel kit thingy..
Comes with a PC card adapter and case...

But basicly is 1.8K for that two if you wish to put it that way

Oh, and the free 64MB CF card from the promotion..

Just tried a night shot.. ( Battery fully charged! )

    Seems over exposed...

Mmm... I am actually not rich...
    My family ain't rich too..

THe fact is I din't fork out 1.8K myself....
Lets just say I was subsidised by my parents...
My dad was the one who wanted to buy a dc and asked me to get one ( and he gave me only a week! )

I exceeded the buget ( as many of you could see.. ) and fork out the rest with my own savings.. but I am more than happy to do so..

Anyway, I will be the one using the most camera all the time..

Let the comparision on material wealth end here and talk more about photography shall we?
In fact, we are all previlaged to be able to own PC and DC...

    Cheers to all..
    End to Sadness..
Shall all light shine thru' darkness..
So we don't have to use flash
