neither. not advising this but just showing you an example. I know down the road, I will getting a particular lens and this lens will gonna have a thread size of 77mm and rest of my lenses are mostly 72 and 67. So, I bought a 77 CPL filter and a 77 to 72 adapter so that this filter can be used in for the current lens and the future lens. However, do note that you can't use you hood with a much bigger filter.

Read the links posted by DD123. Then compare and chose. Don't expect high quality filters to be given as 'freebie'. It's a shop, not charity.

Hoya UV filter is a good choice.. I use Hoya HMC filter for all my lenses and am quite satisfied.

As for the polarising filter, be sure to get the CPL (circular polarising filter) and not the linear polariser. I got my CPL for my 18-55mm lens. Personally I find the CPL useful for shooting landscapes, which is probably what you'll do with your 18-55mm kit lens. the 50mm 1.8 lens will be more for portrait shooting, especially on a cropped camera like the 550D.

Ouch, that's bad to hear man. That's why should always research around before buying.

    I bought my 550D yesterday.

Went to canon at habourfront to redeem the free gifts and was quite surprised to get a class 6 8GB instead of class 4.
I thought they would give class 4.

Bro i did google. Infact i have been googling and researching since July before i decided to jump.
The filter they gave was a Divipower one. When asked how much needed to top up to a hoya one. He said 40 bucks. What the heck..
Dint buy one ofcourse. Havent see any problem with the filter now. But i got a slight lens flare last night.
Might be getting a hoya one for 24 bucks from SLRR.
