Advising you the pros and cons will be too tiring. You can easily search online for a side by side comparison of these 2 cameras on google.

But between the 2, I recommend the D3100.

You're asking for information that people are actually paid to write leh...

but for personal opinion I can give.
I'd go with the D3100 if the grip is ok for you. For me it's too small. My pinky finger has nowhere to rest
    Exploring! :)

That means D3100 and D5000 is basically the same. The price for D5000 is only $999 now :P

    i heard that D5000 is discontinued . . .

unless you like the swivel LCD, else go for D3100, it is a new entry . . .

There are other things that you may need to include when you get your first DSLR . . .
    1 dry cabinet
    2 tripod (good ones pls)
    3 cleaning kit
    4 filter
    5 etc

    for your consideration . . .

if you mean the price, probably so. However, the D3100 and D5000 are different. Both are entry level dslr occupying 2 levels of it.

My pinky still has enough space to rest on the D5k's grip. Just barely...
but yes I find it too small.

So you know what I think of other brands' entry DSLRs

Get D3100.. My wife & 6 years old girl also know how to use it now... but with the LV
    and face detection mode..
Hunt around Buy/Sell section, you might be able to find a 1month old or less set selling below $800
as some of them selling to get D7000 or felt to small to handle..
