    Default i've got a d70s kit. I wanna get a d7000. advice pls!

    hey all!

    i'm stuck. i've got a d70s kit. i want to get a d7000(for a million and 1 reason).

    i'm now stuck at:

option 1: keep my 18-70, buy d7000 body only
option 2: keep my 18-70, buy d7000 kit, then sell away the 18-105
option 3: sell my 18-70 with my d70s, then buy d7000 kit

anyone mind explaining to my why the 18-105 VR would cost lesser than the 18-70 based on the pricing on nikon's website? when it has bigger range, same aperture range, and it has VR?

18-70 was the first dx afs zoom lens. back then it was the ONLY lens from 18mm below $500. with DX(18=abt 27mm), it became a everyday lens that is affordable. also, back those days all lens comes with metal mount.

come to the 18-105 VR..its plastic mount. in fact, all kit lens these days are plastic mount. this is surely one way to cut cost. also, if the mount is now plastic, i am sure that there are more things inside the lens where plastic is used compared to metal previously.

no shame on nikon, all brands produce affordable entry level DSLR this way.

Do you really need the focal length from 70 to 105 mm ?

If you do, then sold your 18-70 and go to 18-105 VR

My recommendation: keep all. The D70 is a good cam, can use as backup or like mine converted to IR. The 18-70 lens is great it only sees less action since I have the 24-70.

Good general purpose... go for 18~200mm. Most of the pictures in my web album made with 18~200mm.

18~70mm is more of an mid range general event lens and the next best DX since the 17~55mm. FX world, we look at 24~70, 24~105mm, DX, the somewhat equivalent is 17~55, 18~70mm then.

18~70mm is small, compact and you would spend less (not much) on filters. They don't make kit lens with so much substance in it nowadays.

It's more worth to get the D7000 kit. If you don't want the 18-105, based on the B & S going rate, you can sell it and you nett cost would be lower than buying body alone.

18-70 is a dark horse. Many people see it as a kit lens and do not regard it as a serious contender. However, I personally feel that the quality is marvelous. Don't under-rate its value just b'cos of the label "kit lens". Believe in its performance. It's a lens that I will not give up.

    Agree completely. Marvelous lens.
I will keep the 18-70 if I were in your shoes.

The 18-70 was my first DX lens (and first AF lens). It has the fastest AF, one of the best IQ, visible focusing scale, metal mount, largest max focal length's aperture...amongst all the kit lens.

I switched that to an 18-200vr and was regretful with respect to the AF speed...

In short, keep the 18-70 over the 18-105vr.
Dun blame the camera...blame the one behind the viewfinder :bsmilie:

    Totally agreed.

I have the D70s Kit with 18-70mm but recently bought the D7000 kit with 18-105mm.
I was surprised when I see the mount of the 18-105mm is plastic.

18-70mm is a good quality lens, so keep it

Get D7000 body only and keep your 18-70.

Don't try to sell the 18-105. Tons of people will be selling it.

Or you can upgrade your 18-70 to something like a 17-55/2.8 or 17-50/2.8. You can then sell me your 18-70.

As many brethrens have said, 18-70 has metal mount, probably better SWM, focus scale, and likely more metal components so will survive better. Most importantly the aperture at 70mm is f/4.5, while other kit lenses are at or near f/5.6. That would take the advantage of VR off to only about 1 stop instead of 2, but if there is subject movement then the 18-70 would be better.

IQ wise there is little to separate the 2 lenses, so keeping the 18-70 means smaller lens, better built, larger aperture at 70mm, getting 18-105 means getting a slightly longer range, and VR.

I'd forward the argument that it depends on your usage, consider:
    (1) if you like a more rugged lens
    (2) if you are likely to want a longer telephoto reach

Then the choice should be 18-70, and add a 70-300VR, or 80-200. The additional reach to 105mm is not significant if you are a telephoto person.

If you like an all-in-one solution, then keep 18-105 and perhaps sell the 18-70. Anyway the BnS price for 18-70 is around 250 and 18-105 about 300-320, the price of keeping both is small.

i have the 18-70 and was also contemplating on getting an 18-105mm coz of the vr (i used to have one before but i sold it along with the camera), but then ive found out the distortion on 18-105m is much greater than that of the 18-70 which eventually i will end up spending more time in pp than shooting. if only this lens (18-70) has the VR, it would be perfect. (oh btw i like the 16-85mm VR, just that its like 3x the price of 18-70).

I'd say, Keep the lens, buy the d7k body.

If u need the range, u can always get the 55-200mm or 70-300mm lens.

In all your 3 options, one thing is constant. You are getting the D7000.
    So get the D7000 first!!!

You don't have to bother about the kit lens for D7000 as you can get better ones later.
