if the youths carried cameras they might do something but they were carrying parangs.
btw the gangters have strong network in the police force.

Gang chopping gang has nothing to do with computer game.

It had such show of violent and bloodshed since dunno-when-gang-started, in whatever period of time, in the 50's, 70's, 90's or the 21st century.
Back in the e.g. 30's they do not have computer yet and probably play chinese chess or 4 colour cards.

What do you expect when such secret society member seek vengence, over however such trivial matter? Just use harsh/coarse languages at each other and go home after choice of words has exhausted or became repetitive?

There will be blood, it is just whether someone got killed or not.

P/S : This POV is deduced from my observation.

Either the gangs have somehow screwed up their "code of conduct" or these are just wannabes shouting the gang name cuz they think it's cool...

I don't think gangs in the past just picked on random people, shout their gang name and just use parang chop people.

Nobody wants to be a failure. If they cannot excel in the cultural norms and demands of the society, they will excel in other deviated sub-cultures. A social price that we need to pay for a fast pace unforgiving society.

the government should open up more avenues for these boys.. such as sports, dance or even photography. not every job needs academic skills.

i believe sports will teach kids hardwork, determination, and a whole lot more of other good moral values.

    that is speculation, or fact?

better not to go around making such statements, no one will back you up for sure.

if the youths carried cameras, i suspect they would be taking part in $20 photoshoots on weekends. which i guess is better than slashing people, but it would be not a very good use of their time either... oh well.

I believe that there are such activities. But such lifestyle must be cultivated from young and very dependant on the effort, time and money from parents. Unfortunately, many parents just can't afford all these.

by the time these youths get into trouble they are already so ingrained in their sub-culture values that it is almost no return. The relaspe rate of Boy Home and prison is super high.

This gang violence is related to gang territory.

369 is a very old gang.

Back in the 80s, when I was in secondary school, I learnt from my classmate, not to go to certain basket ball court near my home. Otherwise, I will be mistaken as rival gang members and may get hack/stab by the 369 gang. He told me if I want to use the basket ball court, I need to join the gang. There are many places near my home where I need to make detour to avoid danger from these gangs.

Sometimes, the gang will use marker to draw inside the HDB lift to indicate to others that this is their turf. They usually hang out at the void deck of those one room HDB flats where many of the gangs members live.

Fortunately, now I don't see them anymore. It seem that they have move away from my neighbourhood. The one room HDB flats near my home only have senoir citizens.

These gangs have always been around. The police can't do much because the members have many underage teenagers.

Yea...when I am schooling 20 years ago...already have 369, 24, and the other red colour something. Seems like there is no way to eradicate these from even a modern and compact society like Singapore. Seems like they will be around for a long time unless the police decide enough is enough. Is 2 slashing a week apart enough?

I dunno....maybe the opening of the casino has something to do with the re-emerging of these SS. The influx of prostitutes, the opening of casino, ah long and secret societies...what's next? drugs? I think we are moving back in time. The Singapore government better sit up and stop thinking all about foreign policies and neglect the interior security issues.

its just a group of kids who think they very big.

i have met a few ex gangsters before. most regret joining much later on in life. have a relative that spent most of his life in jail. his son recently just went in too.

i quote from his son's letter back to family.

"dad, pls dun hit mum. i am willing to accept my punishment as it is my fault for the crime committed. all the uncles and aunties must help look after my family. when i come out of jail i will be a changed man."

yea. 369, 123, 456. big deal. once u kenna caught by the big gang (police), u will cry till ur pants drop. wisen up a bit, dun be so sek zhui. i seen enough to know enough.

most are just teenagers who think brothers are cool. just some irritating ppl who are a burden to the society.

When the police tighten the control, the gang will lie low.
When the police become lax, the gang will make a come back.

It is very hard to eradicate them if the police are too passive - do action when people complain to MP. When nobody complain, they will wayang and do nothing.

Gangs and their wannabes/copycats can never be completely eradicated no matter how many policemen or soldiers you have. The government can only limit or control their influence and impact on the society. Even when we think the Police are not doing anything much, there is always work going on in the background. Else they will not be able to round up these people so fast. Good intel obtained from all the groundwork done before, helped make the arrests very efficient.

The recent Bt Panjang teenagers slashing incident, location happens to be near my block.
I have called up the police post so many times to complain of group of teenagers loitering, shouting and playing skateboard around my block in the past. The police always full of crap excuse and say they will monitor. Use their butt eye to monitor

And I do think the IRs might help fuel more gang activities and social problems. While it is a money maker, it will come at a social cost, and we will see just how much in the years to come.

Punish them severely. Murderers should be hanged even if they are teenagers. This should work.

Sometimes...I see the way some teenagers behave. I wonder are they born rebellious, are raised differently or exposed to the dark side by friends. How can someone so young be so rebellious? When I am young, I am not exactly goody 2 shoes but would never resort to carrying knife out and slash people. End of the day, these young mind do not know they are being manipulated by adults to do sinister things that they will regret later in life. When I don't do well in my studies, I already regret so much now. I cannot imagine those who go around slashing others during their youth. One moment of folly and you spend a lifetime trying to make up for it.
