Default Do you believe 95% on surveys feel proud be a singaporean??

SINGAPORE : The Education Minister and Second Minister for Defence, Ng Eng Hen said he is upbeat about Singapore youth and their sense of belonging to their country.

He said two National Education surveys on students conducted in 2008 and 2010 showed that over 95 per cent were proud to be Singaporeans.

Similar surveys on National Servicemen have also consistently shown that a majority feel they belong here and would defend Singapore should it come under threat.

Speaking at the 2nd Connexion Seminar on Tuesday, Dr Ng said new media has played a major role in this sense of increased participation among the young.

At the seminar, National Education practitioners received the thumbs up for using new media better to engage Singaporeans.

Dr Ng, who was the Guest-of-Honour at the event, said: "I told practitioners that from time to time, when there are criticisms and negative sentiments, not to be discouraged, that questioning is a natural process.

"But thankfully, I think we're quite happy that surveys show that there's a great sense of belonging. And I think that our young are optimistic and we have built something precious, and something which Singaporeans are willing to defend."

Dr Ng said this should encourage Singapore to continue finding innovative ways to directly engage students.

National Education, which covers Singapore's history as well as issues of social and national concern, do this through the prowess of technology.

For instance, to find out more about certain heritage sites, take a picture with a smartphone and an image-matching system will furnish you information.

COL (Ret) Png Bee Hin is the CEO of Leadership Development Resources, which developed an application that allows students to learn about National Education through handheld devices.

He said: "We've always wanted to reach out to young people, and we realise that using the tour guide concept didn't quite work. The best way to engage them is using self-directed and collaborative learning. And that's why we use the power of GPS and image recognition technology to engage them."

For the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF), its YouTube channel - cyberpioneerTV - has garnered more than two million cumulative views since it was launched nearly two years ago.

Clara Tan, who is the Covering Head of the Internal Media Department at MINDEF said: "People are commenting on the channel, they're telling us that they enjoy 'Every Singaporean Son', they're sharing their National Service experiences through cyberpioneerTV through the 'Every Singaporean Son' episodes we're putting up.

"Basically what we're doing is creating a platform for the public to interact with us and to be part of this content creation process. And in this process, they will learn more about defence." - CNA /ls

Sounds damn dodgy. Like damage control after the student that questioned GCT during his visit to NTU. Timing so good?

    1st... I'm proud to be a S'porean.

    2nd... I don't believe 95% of S'porean is so.

3rd... I don't really care or is bothered by this news.

4th... If anyone felt that going overseas is better... please leave ASAP.

5th... I welcome all FT and even FW... since I can't depend on S'poreans to 'defend' Singapore anymore. Might as well have more of you guys/gals here to replace all those planning to leave Singapore anyway.

What damage control? Good to hear from people like him. Just because some policies do not meet his expectation, he decided not to defend the country...

    What a joke!

    "surveys on student and young"

duh, students don't have to pay for their own school fees, own foods, own clothes , own houses, of coz they are happy.

there was another survey conducted on working adult, more than 70% are not happy with Singapore.

I don't think the survey is very accurate. It is rather one-sided.

There is another school of though which can explain why the figures are so high. There is a general mood of perceived repression should people choose the "wrong" answer.

After being exposed to so many cultures, citizen benefits ( sound policies ) and countries....I think the best is still Singapore ! Of course the only downside is country is abit small and nothing much to offer in terms of leisure (nightlife excluded). Things may change though, till then time for another thread Wife always complain that I always make remark on the goodness of Singapore and make comparison ( to her is a complain ) when I travel in foreign land and ask me to enjoy the trip. I hear our foreign counterpart complaining about their country. I, on the other hand praise our mother land and complain about others..BAD BAD ME ! Must learn to appreciate all good things regardless of where I am.

    Exactly
It doesn't do any damage control at all on the questions GCT were asked.

Are the surveys conducted during school holidays where our youths have plenty of time, energy and money to spend and they are at their highest stage of happiness and freedom?

i am proud to say that i'm proud to be a singaporean.

    (1) my country is bloody beautiful
    (2) we have a whole load of good food
    (3) we have many beautiful cats lying in slutty poses everywhere
    (4) it is really quite clean
    (5) we are really too spoilt, the transport network here is leading to obesity (i'm sure) in some way

is singapore perfect? of course not, don't be silly. but i think we should not forget the fact that the word "singapore" refers to more than just a government and a bunch of systems that anyone could really nitpick at, if they had half a brain, because you can't please everyone.

i think i'm proud enough to acknowledge that singapore is more than just a bunch of people that a lot of people on the internet claim to be unhappy with. i'm also proud enough of my country to see that it's made out of so much more than the narrow-minded definition that most people give it. i think it's sad that most people that have responded think that singapore just refers to the government. certainly, your life doesn't revolve around the government? what about the xmm that smiles at you so sweetly through the camera? that is uniquely singapore. what about the singlish you hear on tv, that is uniquely singapore. what about the fact that you have kopitiams where cheap food (relatively) is abundant and you can find old men drinking beer and talking about their lives? are you saying that all there is singapore is politics and everything unhappy in your life is singapore? then you need to get out more.
