Thread: The White Rainbow

    Default The White Rainbow

Hi all, new to Club Snap (been lurking around for some time anyway, too lazy too sign up ). Anyway, been playing around with a cheapo IR filter, and I need some feedback.

    1. In what area is critique to be sought?
    Composure, exposure.

    2. What one hopes to achieve with the piece of work?
    Soft, "surreal" feel.

    3. Under what circumstance is the picture taken? (physical conditions/emotions)
    Broad daylight - 12pm, partial rain-clouds. 720nm F14 ISO200 20 secs.

    4. What the critique seeker personally thinks of the picture:
Could have been a lot better - using a yet smaller aperture, and taking it in bulb mode should help.

Post-processed btw - de-saturated to black & white, s-curve to bring out the contrast.

    The feeling is all wrong.

It is like putting a wonderful makeup on a model's face and then shooting her photos in black-and-whites, under spooky lightings.

    o_O Spooky.

LOL Looks like I've still got a long ways to go on capturing the right mood.
    Thanks for the feedback.

I think the scene would have looked better in colour. Not the best time of the day to take the photo, the sun seems harsh, the bridge is a little too bright. Perhaps you could revisit that location during sunrise or sunset for another shot? Notice the debris trail in the river and motion blurred leaves in the foreground, any reason for using slow shutter? Also, there is a speck of dust on the top left corner either in your lens or on the sensor.

how does inclusion of that tree and its swaying branches help your picture?

Actually, the setting for the shot I had in mind was more like this :
    http://en.fotolia.com/id/13206373

It rained that morning... so I went later in that day (thought no fish got prawn also good, but seems like it went horribly wrong )

Dust particle on the top left is actually the lamp post... Air bubble in my tripod was in the red circle while I took this?

Agreed, timing, lighting wrong. Swaying branches... I cannot chop away. NParks will come after me

Thanks all for the feedback, know what to look out for in the future...

of course not, but you can move yourself to avoid those swaying branches.

I like your colour photo better than the black and white one.

How about shooting from the other side of the water or the other side?

tripod is in the red circle... but what about the ball head?

There is obvious problems, just look at the lamp post. it is leaning to the right. So either your picture is tilted, or you lens is pointing slightly upward, causing keystone distortion (which you did not correct as well). Always take note of the verticals.

I missed out the ballhead alignment... Will "challenge" this again someday. But sadly, it keeps raining these days.

If your tripod is level, and you ball head is not... nothing is level.
