Both the lenses are of different focal lengths and for different purposes, what do you want to shoot?

The two lenses are for different purpose.

If you plan only take one lens during your trip, better choose Nikon AF-S 17-55 f/2.8. Would be better if you could bring both Sigma 10-20(for landscape) and Nikon AF-S 17-5 f/2.8 (for general purpose and bokeh).

Whether it's first or second hand one, it is your own personal decision and depend on your budget. If you have no experience buying 2nd hand lens, better to go with someone more experienced with.
    NIKON D90 (2008-2010), D700 (2010-2012), D800 (2012-2014), DF (Dec 2013-Sep 2017)

Wanting to go for the D7000 (hopefully can get the body only option) but my preference is not either of the two options but 18-200mm VR.

Hi Jeff, it would definitely be better if I had the 17-55 and the sigma, but due to budget constraint, it's the typical question of good glass and cheaper body, or not so good glass with a good body. And for the focal length, the 17-55 will do for me alone if it's my only lens. Thus if I were to go with the newer and more expensive body, I only have kit lens, thus have the budget to go with the Uwa sigma. I'm only considering 2nd hand due to budget constraint. Hope you guys can help me decide better

You need to decide on your own, we can only provide suggestions

    Another option is D7000 kit + 2nd hand tamron 17-50 f/2.8 non-VC (think ~600 or lesser).

If you got budget constraint, would you consider a 2nd hand D40x which is selling quite cheaply in BnS? Why aim for D7000 if you cannot afford it? It's not as if life and death you must get it.

Perhaps i should put it this way: Im a guy who doesnt see the difference between a new set and a used set if the condition is pretty good. I know some people who see 2nd hand things as "ewwww", or "machiam pick from rubbish one". Thus my idea of budget constraint is just my BUDGET thats all. Not to say im literally sweeping the floor for a living and scrimping and saving to buy these equipment. As i said, its just a matter of good lens and not so good body or vice versa. Thats it.

Anyway i appreciate the input and will prolly take the poll seriously as even i myself voted for the d7000 kit and the UWA.

Go to D7000+ kit lens with the Sigma UWA.
D7000 is a better body compared with D90. Together with kit lens + 2nd hand sigma 10-20 , in my opinion this would be a very good starter kit for you. Later if you have additional fund, you could top-up with 50mm f/1.4 or f/1.8 for bokeh.

Nikon 17-55 f/2.8 is a good lens, but it's not compulsory. It's replaceable with the fast prime lens.

Just my 2 cents. Hope this helps
    NIKON D90 (2008-2010), D700 (2010-2012), D800 (2012-2014), DF (Dec 2013-Sep 2017)

Yeah it does. the 17-55 is probably kinda heavy for everyday use too. Yup think will go with the 1st option after all. =)

Yup grab the d7k. I mean start off w average glass but with the years, u can buy new lenses to add to ur equipment a d7k will prob last a good 2years b4 the next model comes out so i think its wise to put ur money with the d7k.

You see, the problem with your argument is that a lens lasts for as long as you stick to the system, while a camera body lasts only 2 years.

Not trying to find fault with you but really, good lens + budget body > good body + budget lens. The kit lens is able to produce very good images, no doubt, but good lenses give more justice to the camera sensor than cheap lenses

for me I definitely like to hv good lens over the body. With the recent trips encountered rainy days, that make me need the D7000 weather proof body too. Else you will miss the shots specially travel with tour group. End up making the cost shoot up double.

why would you want to have the poll when you have already decided what you want?? Will you change your mind if we all vote for D90 and nikkor 17-55 f2.8?

Honestly speaking, this isn't a good way to find out what you want to put in your buying list.

First, you have to decide what you want to shoot. Then you can determine the lens or lenses you may need. With a budget you have set out for, then you can determine which camera you can buy with the left over budget after the lens.

Ahya...make it so complicated. Buy a D7000 and get done with it after all you already made up your mind.

Lets move on and see what accessories members here can suggest for the D7000? Which Sponge Bob stickers to go with it?

Agreed with Hotwork77. Buy the D7000 and a Sigma 10-20mm. You start off with a camera with the latest technology and the flexibility of two lens covering the range from 10mm to 105mm.
