It's either that or maybe I used too low shutter speed

Another reason might be because I pre-focused on the log

No sharpness of cyclist could be caused by motion of cyclist.
What was your setting?

guys, give him a break. he's using a P&S style camera, not a DSLR. at least he tried - much better than not trying.
