    You have a kit lens right? Leave your focal length at 50mm and force yourself not to use the zoom ring, and walk around your house shooting people and things. You will know if that focal length is suitable for you.

    After that, try the same thing but this time set focal length to 35.


    You will know the answer soon enough.

    Hi, I will buy a Tamron 17-50 with or without VC if I can afford to replace the 18-55mm kit lens.

    a F2.8 zoom cannot do shoot as low light as a fast prime. Try it out and you will understand what I mean.

    You mean prime lens with f1.8 & below will be faster & good at low light?

    of course. It has a larger max aperture F1.8 vs F2.8. meaning you can let more light enter the camera, so you can get a faster shutter speed in low light.

    you are right! 35mm seems more capable to take closer objects than 50mm....

    When in doubt about focal length, always use your kit lens or 55-200 to test out the focal length.
