Thread: Any foreseeable service problem for old lenses

Default Any foreseeable service problem for old lenses

I am considering to purchase one of the following lenses:-

    300mm f2.8 IF-ED AF-S 8935 units Jul 96 - Feb 01
    300mm f2.8 IF-ED AF-S II 5705 units Feb 01 - Sep 04

2 weeks ago, NSC said they have not receive any instructions from Japan to stop servicing.

The price of the current version AF-S 300/2.8 G IF-ED VR II is double that of the above lenses. I do not think i will be hand holding this lens for shooting.

Should I buy new or used ?

If money is allowed, better to take a new set.
As there is a high risk for an old lens to spoil in its AF motor.

If the spart parts for AF are same for VR and non-VR, would it be ok to buy used? Is SWM responsible for AF ? The AF for non-VR is very responsive.
