    Default Samsung NX100 Review

9 months after Samsung announced its first APS-C sized mirrorless EVIL camera, the NX10, it has quickly followed up with the announcement and launch of the more compact NX100 that comes without a EVF together with 2 new lenses .... a 20mm/f2.8 prime and a 20-50 f3.5/5.6 zoom

The NX100 was announced less than a month ago 14 Sept....... its in stores today ...... less than 3 weeks after its announcement .........that is pretty quick ......

Qualifying review statement: I have barely 48hrs with this camera, having collected it from Samsung late friday afternoon yesterday and will have to return it Monday morning.

    First impressions:
    1. Build quality is sturdy....and it is compact in the same size category as the Olympus EP's and the Panasonic GF1 moulds
    2. Layout of the control/command dial, playback and delete buttons are in their usual places BUT the positions of other buttons are unusual. see below image for an idea what I'm talking about
    3. UNIQUE - Both lenses incorporate a iFn button on the lens barrel with a rotating ring that allows adjustments of EV+/- , Aperture settings, WB and ISO for quicker on-the-fly adjustments to settings while shooting.... after a while it is a totally cool feature
    4. There are 3 ways to adjust ISO, WB .... a bit of overkill... via lens barrel iFn button, on the main control dial and through the regular Main Menu
    5. Zoom lens incorporates a Zoom Lock button that automatically sends the camera into Sleep Mode when activated
    6. There is a dial on top plate that does 2 things....it allows you to zoom in/out dial when reviewing images..... and when simultaneously pressing the +/- button it allows you to adjust exposure compensation up/down

NOTE the dimunitive size of the kit zoom..... one of the smallest even amongst M4/3 kit zooms

NOTE the iFn button on the 20mm prime below

NOTE the iFn button AND a zoom lock button below

NOTE the 'inland migration' of the AEL and +/- buttons .... likely for ergonomic reasons to keep the wandering thumb from accidentally triggering these functions
NOTE also the far left placement of the DISPLAY button .... again I assume that ergonomics consideration at work as I have many times accidentally re-adjust the choice of display format
    Good Job Samsung

NOTE the adjustment dial ..... this allows for exposure compensation adjustments when the +/- button is simultaneously pressed and when viewing pics, it is where you zoom in and out to inspect your image in more detail
NOTE also the ON/OFF switch..... it is located a step down from the top plate
NOTE grease marks on shutter release button are mine from an oily breakfast ha ha

    Feedback:

Yah have to confess the ergonomics is not bad ... needs getting used to

The minimalist lines ..... Either love or hate thing

User interface took all of 10-15 mins to figure out

Weird thing is that for some functions you have 3 ways of getting it done and even TWO shortcuts
    Strange indeed

Covered a small event this Sat evening and had the opportunity to shoot with the NX100 for a little while

I had it paired with a simple PT04 remote trigger and receiver attached to a YN 460II
Shot in Manual mode with ISO at 400 and flash set at 1/16 output

Shot at Beer Market bar at Clark Quay. Anyone who has been there will attest to the extremely low dark ambiance of the environment there.... the green AF Assist beam did well up to 2 to 2.5m away from subjects..... further than that it (and ANY OTHER brand's AF Assist beam for that matter) had problems locking in AF

The results turned out pretty decent......clean and lean ....... I think

I'll be putting the 20mm prime through its paces later next weekend but I normally shoot on the fly .... no tripod mounted wall charts or that sort.... but one thing for sure... the kit zoom is a very decent performer, so I expect the 20mm to do well

Point to note.....there are NO indications on the lenses that these are Schneider designed/licensed lenses .... (the zoom does have an ED marking) so in spite or despite that, the optics are resolving decently so far from what the 100% crops show

Returning all the stuff on Monday 11 Oct ......... hope to get them back next weekend again.

Anyone bought it yet? I dont even know how much the NX100 is retailing for ........

Please feel free to share your own feedback and images if you're an owner, thanks!!

Got myself a black NX100 last week during a bout of retail therapy.
I would have loved to get a brown one but my dealer only has a black one and I got a very good price from him, so black it is.

I like the i-Function feature. Changing settings by pressing the i-Function button on the lens and turning the focus ring is surprisingly natural and much easier than the normal way. What I like is that I don't need to take my eyes away from the LCD screen while looking for the right buttons to press.

Another new function is i-Scene, a function that the NX10 don't have even after the latest firmware update. This feature is only useful to those who like to shoot with the Scene modes as it allows the user to change the scene by pressing the i-Function button on the lens instead of diving into the menu to change the scene mode.

As with the NX10, I find the image quality and the high ISO performance to be very good.

Here's some sample shots with my cats as model of course...

    1/80s f/5.6 at 45.0mm ISO 100 with Flash

    1/50s f/4.0 at 26.0mm ISO 250

    1/50s f/4.0 at 24.0mm ISO 500

    1/25s f/5.6 at 50.0mm ISO 800

Under the current promotion, buyers of the NX100 can also buy the new SEF15A flash for $50. According to the rep at the Samsung showroom at Vivocity, you would have to get it from the dealer you bought the NX100 from and not from the showroom or any other dealers. He also said that the half case is already available ex-stock.

    Good IQ compact camera.

I just wished that it had a built-in flash.

Why did they omit such an essential item ?
