To me, strobes allow you to have a more powerful light source (since it's only momentary), and doesn't feel so harsh to the subject. Imagine you have a super-bright light source shining on you, hard to avoid squinting or shielding your eyes.
Yes, true. I'm wondering if they do use continuous light to light up the backdrop or something and then use flash for the subjects?...

i remember i saw a video in youtube when they demo.. continuous lights are not shine directly at the person's face.. instead there is an angle and direction in which the light is placed. Not sure if it will affect the outcome..

Are you joining? It could be good exposure though - pros and cons included of course... I'm sure they are just making use of talents to boost TV ratings...

this is so true, seldom lights are point directly at a person face, thats why u got a key light, fill light, kick light, eye light, and so many others,

strobes or continuous is a choice, depend on space budget or preferences, its easy to cut down power on stobes than lights especially if u dun have a variety of lights at hand, thou the solution is ND or diffuser,...

no invitation lah, you need to sign up yourself . . . anyone can sign up.

maybe i should go and try . . . but in competitions, i normally will lose my mind.
For eg . . . i went for a school chess competition and i lost in the 2nd round. After the whole session, i take on the champion again and i won him flat for few matches. He was blur too.

Later when i enter and they ask me to shot, i will be trying to set my camera and not shooting . . . that will be a super laughing stock for me.

Like I said... PROS and CONS of such escapades... But it is an experience afterall, good or bad...and there is surely something to learn from it... (like "I'd never go through such rubbish AGAIN!")

Edit: if you are thinking of joining, what is the main purpose? Gain experience? Or for publicity? Etc, etc... It might help you decide better whether it is worth the trouble or not...

not 'zai' la . . . i 'pian jia pian jia' only.

You can give him the tripod but pls advice him to get a better one. While using the tripod, advice him to hang the camera strap over his head . . . safety precaution.

Btw... what kind of material do you recommend for white backdrops har? I'm thinking of something like this, but DIY:

I've used white paper and they crumble too easily, turns yellow over time.
