Default Perfect Balance

Just to follow up from Sonix's observation of this species of bee hanging on to its perch just using its mouth to bite on to something, here's another shot taken at Sime Forest this morning. The bee seems to remain very stationary and well-balanced on its perch. Notice that the legs are all folded against its body and not touching anything. Interesting posture...

Nikkor 70-180mm (tripod mounted) ; ISO 320 ; 1/90s / f9.0 ; -0.3EV ; fill flash -1.7EV

What a weird pose by the bee. It has very nice eyes and wings if you observe it clearly... haven't managed to get a nice shot of it like you and sonix though. Nice one Papilio!

Thanks guys. Should've used an even smaller aperture for a better DOF!

Oh yeah hor, tripod mounted. Lighting dosen't look very good, cloudy this morning?

Bits of the blue are burned by flash. Reflective or overexposed?

Actually, the parts at the side of the thorax are white and not blue. Only the lower half of the bee has the iridescent blue colour. I suppose the whites were blown out by the flash.

Nice capture Papilio.

I tired it with 105mm at higher shutter speeds handheld
and I only caught the 'smoke' trails of this critter....

Actually, it stayed quite still for about a minute or so - looked like it bit into the snakeweed and took 40 winks.
