Why not get a tripod that can double as a monopod?

wah...why everyone going to Taiwan? Not trying to have bad mouth....but I think Hualian has a track record of earth quake in September. So if that is one of your destination, do equip with earth quake drills.

Well, Traditionally Aug & Sept are the Typhoon season for Taiwan and Southern Provinces of China. 1 typhoon just left Taiwan these few days, landed in Fujian, and turned into tropical storm. Just saw the news, quite a sign to see the ROC army armoured personnel carriers on the flooded streets of Taiwan ( I think its Kao Hsiung ) .

At least , go now, risk of another typhoon should be low, just have to deal with the flooded streets and maybe earthquakes ? Good luck to all heading there, remember your travel insurance, make plans for alternative transport, lodgings etc. Bring plastic bags for your cameras too..

as for the original question of tripod vs monopod for holidays, i will choose a tripod over a monopod for the reason that it will come in handy in long exposure situations ..

I will be going to Taiwan soon, but in November.

I've decided to bring my tripod, but i will only bring it out only if that day's itenary deserves some longer shutter speed. If that day consists of mainly factory visiting etc, the tripod will be left at the hotel room or in the luggage.

I went to Taiwan on a 8day tour package on June this year. I bought tripod for taking group picture and landscape. On tour group, did not get much time to deploy tripod for landscape photos.

I used monopad with 70-200mm len to assist in picture taking during cultural performance show. There is not enough space to use tripod and it is more flexible.

Likewise, I refer to the day's programme and location in deciding whether to use tripod/monopad.

    Cheers

Taiwan offers some very interesting sites for catching sunrises and sunsets. You will need a tripod for these situations. That is if you are travelling free and easy. Travelling as a packaged tour, you will have minimal chance to catch any sunrise or sunset at a leisurely pace.

I find monopod is only useful when you climb mountains where it can double up as a walking stick.

Other situations, just bump up the ISO on your camera and shoot handheld. A F2.8 lens, or fast prime will help.
