Hi guys , i just bought my tamron 90mm and find that when i take insects i have to get real close and there is not enough light! thats not cool! and i find myself always shooting at iso 1600 which is not good cause i get alot of noise. i need help , i dont have an external flash and i think that if i use my cameras in built flash , it will scare the insects away, or blind a baby. i really need help. pls advice me what can i do to do macro/ portrait if this happens!

can i give another suggestion ?

i use my camera pop up flash for my macro and use a DIY diffuser out of those translucent milk bottle. Hmmm, cost less than $2.

    For your consideration.

Don't worry that our flash will blind them . . .

I use this difuser for my built-in flash.

Built in flash can't help when the lens (Tamron 90mm) is extended fully. There will be shadows when you're shooting, esp. if you add on a hood.

Have it cross your mind to use the sunlight. Yes, it sounds abit hard to "tap" the natural light. But give it a try and you just might be amazed by the results. The prime time for insects sighting is between 8-9+am in the day( tats wat i discover at bt batok nature reserve, sightings time might vary for other sites) .

But if you are doing nite time macro, sure you will still need to rely on a flash.

For macro, external flash is quite important. If you got budget, suggest saving up or lookout in the buy/sell section. The external flash is not only useful but for most of your low light situation. I've no experience in the 3rd party flash but many still advise getting original flash. Price can be quite a big difference but I'll leave this decision to you.

As Zac08 had mentioned, pop up flash will cast a shadow when you extend the barrel. Might want to just give it a try. If ok, you can just use this method for the time being.
