Default Safe to use?

Is it safe to use a battery that is not original on a camera? Let's say a BP-511 battery manufactured by Megapower on an EOS-300D? I bought one such battery today and it jus cost $25 when an original cannon one costs 80 over. Thanks!

just to share with you...i buy a 3 party battery new from a shop in a month bag. After some uses, the battery power now drain out very fast. Bring to shop to complaint but it refuse to exchange. this is despite it says got 1 to 1 within the 6 month warranty period. It said i did not charge properly in the intial charge which i have charged properly according to the instruction. Now i only use canon brand type of battery...got no such problem. I think 3 party battery has no QC.

Is the brand of your battery Megapower? Mine too has a six month warranty.

1 cannon battery costs 3 third party batteries.
Therefore, the intended life of the battery must be more than 1/3 the life of the original battery.

I have 2 Megapower batteries, the older one is already about 1.5 years old. So far both are quite ok, lasts quite long.

But I would say that even for 3rd party batt, I would recommend "reputable" ones. E.g. East Gear has a reputation to keep, so firstly, they would want to ensure QC is kept up. Secondly, they are sure to honour the warranty.

I wouldn't say the same for some shops in Sim Lim.
In fact, the 2 batt I bought, the receipt was hastily written out. That guy only scribbled the date and BP-511 as description, then gave me the receipt. So I think the 6 months warranty is as good as none.
