Thread: White Balance Card

  1. #1

    Default White Balance Card

Looking for a white balance card or something that can used to set custom white balance on the spot. saw this http://www.cbllensusa.com/. but is a bit expensive.

Is there any alternatives which is under $50?

Both have their pros and cons. When using a grey card you have to shoot the card to get a reading and if you and your subject are under different lights you have to ask your subject to hold it, which might be a hassle. Using a cap, you can just point and shoot to get a reference. however, if you are into PP, then using a grey card would make it faster to process the pictures.

ts, sorry to hijack ur thread..

just wanna ask, is it better to use awb when u are in
a situation/event where the lighting may change?

e.g. the event is held indoor but next programme
they will be moving somewhere else

Actually with a white balance cap, the best way is to put the cap on and point the camera towards the light source that is illuminating your subject. That will be more accurate.

In this situation, it will be better to shoot AWB in RAW, and adjust the WB in PP as needed.

some people are happy with decent results from using Auto WB in such situation, some people prefer to fine tune the WB during the post.

so it depends what works on you.

When you put on the lens cap thingy, your entire camera became an incident light meter ... so use it like an incident light meter.. to get your WB.

So which one do you recommend? The white balance lens cap with the bulb at the front like a light meter or the Expodisk? I don't think there is much of a difference in accuracy right?

    Whichever works better for you.

I use those Made in China ones with a small white bulb. Works fine for me.

i bought a magazine called something like Digital SLR Photography for Portraits, its a UK magazine. and it came with a pair of cut-out 18% grey card and a white card, cost me 10 dollars only. i find the info in the mag useful too, so extra benefit and free.
