1) Nikor AF 50mm f/1.8D @ S$170.00 - YES
2) Tamron SP AF28-75mm F/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) @ S$600.00 - WHY? THIS OVERLAPS YOUR RANGE OF THE 18-70.. other then the constant 2.8 3) Tamron AF28-300mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Aspherical (IF) Ultra Zoom @ S$570.00 Ehh.. I never liked super zooms.. I prefer getting at 70-300 or 75-300.. Btw.. wahts the motivation for this next purchase.. is there something you want to achieve.. like low like photography.. or something.. |

Hi,
I am new in DSLR photography. 1) Nikon AF 50mm I will take for sure. Will be used for everyday shots (indoor/outdoor) 2) I will use primarily for family/friends gathering and most of them indoor. That is why I am considring F2.8 with zoom to get a little closer. 3) This will be for my outdoor shots that need extra zoom (I will still use kit lens primarily) |

If you are planning to buy for the sake of buying lenses to "complete" a selection, the 50mm prime would be a good investment.
It's a cheap and good low-light lens. You'll never know when you'll need it... ![]() |

You requirements are so diverse. Unless you are willing to spend, you're not going to fulfill your requirements with one single lens. I suggest you re-assess your needs and prioritise them before you make the purchase. How long have you got the D70 with kit lens for? Have you shot enough to know that you need to buy additional equipment?

The 50/1.8 is a good choice for a low light lens so I would get this. The tamron 28-75 isn't wide enough on the wide end (it's a 42-112mm zoom, as compared to your kit lens: 27-105). There's a very very BIG difference in 42mm vs 27mm, and zero/negligible diffence in 105mm vs 112mm. test it out for yourself. And for family gatherings etc, I can safely say that a wider zoom is preferable to a longer zoom (which in this case the tamron fails miserably: it's neither wider nor significantly longer.) Unless you desperately need the f2.8 constant aperture, I would ditch this lens (use your 50/1.8 if you need big apertures) As for your last option i guess fine for a do it all zoom, but again, the wide is wide enough on your d70. and i would pick a dedicated telephoto zoom (e.g 70-300) rather than a 28-300. this type of zoom range typically means LOTS of compromises in optical quality. |

Hi guys,
Thanks for all suggestions. I just bought the 50mm this afternoon(S$178 at CP). As for the other lenses, I will shoot first using 50mm and kit lens. If later I find a I really need one then nothing to do but buy .Again, thank you guys for your inputs. ![]() Last edited by r4mil; 24th May 2004 at 11:04 AM. |
