most importantly, get someone who knows basic First Aid and has been certified AND remembers how to execute it to be around all the time.

some lines of work are preferred to have personnel handy with their F/A should they need to execute it...

Although the intention to share/spread the knowledge is noble, I am not sure as far as the recommended course of action is concerned.

I'm a doctor (ICU specialist). It sounds rather dubious to me. If you are getting a heart attack the FIRST THING you should do is get help!

Deep breathing MIGHT help by getting some more Oxygen in but I don't think it would be enough to buy you time in a heart attack.

That advice to cough is just pure nonsense. I'm going to get technical here, so pardon me. That manoevre will increase intrathoracic pressure. The immediate effect is to TEMPORARILY increase left sided cardiac output by increasing venous return to the left side of the heart and the added mechanical pressure on the left ventricle. At the same time, RIGHT sided cardiac output is reduced, because of decreased right sided venous return. Because the right heart fills the left (via the lungs), if you do this for more than a few seconds the left side of the heart will have less blood filling it and so total cardiac output will decrease.

Furthermore, this manoevre stimulates the vagal nerve which acts to slow down your heart via the parasympethetic nervous system. This may or may not be a good thing - slowing down the heart reduces cardiac oxygen demand but I believe the effect will be so temporary it will make no difference. What's worse, in certain types of heart attacks, the heart is already beating slowly. If you try this trick, you may cause the heart to slow down excessively or even stop!

    NOT RECOMMENDED.

My advice: stop what you are doing, look for help, and then go find somewhere to lie down until the ambulance arrives. Stay calm. It is important to be lying down, because if your heart stops beating it will be easier to start CPR. Also, lying down puts less stress on the heart (it does not have to beat as hard to overcome gravity), and ensures that your brain is perfused if the blood pressure goes down.

there is one theory that says that if u are alone, u shld try to cough at a regular pace when u feel signs of heart attack coming.

its due to the fact that coughing kinda simulates the regular functioning of the heart muscle contracting and expanding, thus temporarily approximating it to a normal state.

dunno if true or not ?

hi guys.. i have not seen the slide show yet...

but here's what i learnt as a st john first aider:

    1. Get the casualty to sit in a half sitting position, bending forward
    2. If he has any medication, eg aspirin, ask him to chew SLOWLY
    3. Call 995..

that's all he's supposed to do..

as to lying down due to easier to do CPR, i see no need AT ALL cuz it's pretty easy to shift that guy to lying down postion if he falls unconscious... besides, to a experienced first aider, CPR is actually pretty easy process though u will definitely hate the hearing the cracking of ribcage when u are doing the chest compressoins...

I think that whoever created such "tips" should have the moral obligation to ensure that it is medically safe and correct. Someone could die by following the wrong advice spread via e-mail and internet. I've received the e-mail with this advice before. Is there any doctor who can write to the ST forum to clarify the truth of this claims? You could be saving lives here...
